Today the mission is to buy a water filter jug. We used to have one but I can’t find it. More collateral damage from moving. I note that there is a huge range with a huge price variation available online. I think it may be better to try and get one locally. Does any body have any tips or comments?

We have had water filter jugs for many years and each time have chosen from the Brita range in the UK. There are two features that I can point out that would make me choose a particular model. 1. Make sure the jug can be filled without having to remove the lid. This is available on more expensive models. 2. Find a source of filter cartridges that has reductions in price. They are expensive.
I only have experience in the UK.

Had Brita for 9 years à least. I agree with the points made by lurches.brico and lmost supermarkets have them. Cheaper filters are available that are compatible with Brita. No problems with them. Watch out for offers.

We got fed up with paying the price for filters so have been taking the jug (like new) to vide greniers. No takers at 50cents so it went to landfill. I take more items to the tip than I sell. Last trip was to dump over 200 paperbacks. My current stock is tools and hardware and it seems to get heavier every time I have to load up.

I have finished with water filters, tried nearly all of them, I buy the 2l bottles of water from Lidl in huge quantities, I think 22 cents per 2l bottle when I last bought, always keep one/two in the fridge, far cheaper than phaffing about with a jug and filters, cheaper in the long run and more hygienic in my opinion.

Why are people using filters? Is it to bypass any possible contamination or to reduce the hardness of mains water? If the latter how effective is it?
My mains water is hard so I use Brita filters for my DeLonghi bean to cup machine but nothing else. I have thought of using Lidl's bottled water but checking the hardness of it is not easy as they change supplier from time to time..

Where we are in Brittany there is a high mineral content to the tap water and a distinguishable smell on the top of a glass of water, switching to Lidl water was a no brainer really, my daughter when she was at primary school in Brittany used to drink from the school communal drinking fountain, it did make her unwell but that was more to the fact that most children put their mouths around it to drink.

Can't help with femaile Torx. A set will often cost very little more than buying a one off for a job. Search femelle Torx. link

Rather than send stuff to land fill perhaps 'emaus' would take them - assuming there is one near you. We go there to buy books - english and french

The only charity within an hour's drive from us is a local animal one. We often visit to buy books for Mrs.A (but they are getting too expensive) and I'm looking for CDs (useless if you're not looking for disco/dance/country/or classical). They seem to be increasing their prices generally and many people don't bother to go anymore for that reason. Their shop seems to keep going selling overpriced imported UK food items.
