which shop are you talking about? I agree for the price of second hand books, overpriced for some real dogeared stuff

Are you looking for a book on water filters?

The one in Callac. For a very good cause but if they keep raising their prices they are likely to reduce their input.

There is an expat run charity shop in Jugon Les Lacs (22) that has so many mainly English books that they are not accepting any at the moment.

Then if they can't bring themselves to reduce their prices it might be time for a trip to the tip.

Why are people using filters? Is it to bypass any possible contamination or to reduce the hardness of mains water? If the latter how effective is it? My mains water is hard so I use Brita filters for my DeLonghi bean to cup machine but nothing else. I have thought of using Lidl's bottled water but checking the hardness of it is not easy as they change supplier from time to time.. We had been using bottled water for a number of years because we did not like the taste of the tap water. since then we have moved into an urban area where the water supplied was more acceptable, variable. My wife thought that we should start using jug filter. Principally, I think because of recent visits to friends who use one. I am rather conscious of the amount of packaging and non organic waste that we dispose of and try to beep it to a minimum and thought the water filter might be a good idea. Especially at first. Now after a month (?) of using it, I fancy that water filtered by it could taste better. it could be time to change the filter. I will see if that works. If not I reckon it’s back to bottled water for me. That is also variable. Some of it can be rank. Then, perhaps, there is the issue of filter disposal.

We went down the same route as you Nifty and ended back with bottled water, after time the plastic on the filters seem to decompose and washing the filter jug religiously only advances their decline in my opinion.

We have tried to find ways to use the 2l empty plastic bottles to good use, cloches in the veg patch, insect catchers (top cut off and turned inside itself bit of duck tape and hung from a tree with beer and jam inside), stuffed into mole hills to annoy them and paint decanted into them for small jobs around the house (cut in half and attach some string), use another one to hold said paint after with the name of the paint and which room/wall it was used on.
