This has probably been said before but the first time I have come across it, my "Canon" 3in1 needs both its cartridges replacing, over the years its been one or the other, so never really thought about the cost, on "Amazon" a new pair, B/W and Colour is £29.99, to replace the whole printer/ scanner complete with cartridges is £30.99 Totally insane.

I think you will find the ink is only enough to get you started and then you have to fork out for a set of cartridges, a sprat to catch a mackerel.

I found these cartridges so expensive and not environmentally friendly so I went over to an Epson eco tank printer. No sudden stop due to being out of ink and you can see the level of ink in the tank. Ink seems to last a long time and cheaper in 65ml bottles which is a tank full.

To add, we have now gone to a contract where they send you ink as per your usage (Epsom), so we pay a fixed amount per month and they send the ink, we are on the lowest usage level, 50 prints per month for £2.99 but it will roll over if you don't use them, seems to work fine on our UK printer so hopefully there is a EU equivalent, paying under 6p a copy works for us but probably not when we factor in our 16 year old daughter's usage but we spend at least 2.5 months a year in France so build up credit.

+1 here for the Epson Eco-tank. We've had ours for about 6 years. It came with full tanks and a set of re-fill ink bottles which we're still using. It coped with the vast amounts of paperwork/copying involved in applying for French nationality, as well as the annual fun and games with the Tax Office and CPAM. I suppose these printers are more expensive than they were 6 years ago (isn't everything?) but still very good value compared to cartridge ones. Especially when you have to do a 50km round trip to replace them when they inconveniently run out

We purchased a B/W laser printer about 15 years ago and we are still on the first cartridge. We decided to go this way for all the reasons above, as ours is a holiday home we were aware that the amount of use it gets we would have to buy a new cartridge every time we wanted to print anything as it was more then likely the ink would have dried up, wasn't worth the cost.

Even so, I am sure it saves little on cartridge costs and I am am much happier about receiving genuine ones. In the past ink cartridges have not been recognised as genuine and I suspect this is true.

I got caught short a few years ago, so bought a B/W laser printer as well, now on my forth cartridge, will look at the various alternatives. I think a colour laser is probably the way to go. Thanks

I can personally recommend a Brother product. They haven't sunk into the "rip off the domestic users" mindset. They have taken their standards of reliability from the business sector into the home printer range. Maybe a bit large and clunky by some standards but they are worth every penny.

The printer is a Samsung model not known as am in the Uk until next year and the printer lives in France. Any way I would think any make would be something you could look at. We decided we could do without a colour one and went for a basic B/W one. As the toner is a powder it doesn't dry out like an inkjet. As I said the toner is still on the original as supplied with the printer, the only problem now is the printer won't run on Windows 10 but my laptop still runs Win7 so at the moment everything works ok. We got it on a special deal years ago.

An interesting point. Microsoft applies pressure to other industries to not "support" their older operating systems, therefore reinforcing their dominant position in computers. The downside is that those who are cajoled into upgrading to the lastest crapware from Microsoft find a lot of their existing peripherals stop working. Every new OS from Microsoft throws up problems for printers in particular. We are still using a "cleaned up" version of W7 and refuse to change up to anything newer. Any problems that have turned up are soon solved by a workaround that can be found online.

Aardvark. Totally agree with your comment, I have a colour laser at home in the Uk plus a stand-alone scanner neither of them work on Win 10. So we are still on Win 7 at home.
