I don’t have a big stock of kindling for this winter. Looked at various suppliers, diy stores and supermarkets are very expensive more so than last year. As are most products on sale to the public. tried a few wood yards and none can offer kindling. very much like I will have to go hunting for old pallets and split it to bulk up stocks.
Any other ideas or suggestions on how to expand my low stocks.🔥

We used to use those pretendy logs that supermarkets sell, broken up. can’t remember their actual name, highly calorific and made good kindling. Easy to break up too….

Thanks Jackie, i did buy ten packs of these compressed from our local fuel company. Just bought them as standby and never thought of using them for lighting the stove. Good suggestion and will add that to my sources.👍

Your local fruit and veg shop will get a lot of its foods delivered un wood trays or strip-wood crates. They are usually pleased if you take then away rather than they having ro pay for disposal.

Thank you exile, I have seen these light wooden crates at the markets. Lightweight but would certainly do the job, easily broken up. Will make sure the car boot is empty in case I pass a source.👍

We usually have the same problem part way through the winter but thankfully I have a shed full of offcuts from my boat building days. This evening I had to use some mahogany bits. When that's gone it will be Iroko, and finally teak. It pains me to do it but since I am barely able to keep up with the house, garden, and vehicle maintenance these days it is clear I will never have time to use the decent wood for any hobby projects.

And cursing those damned ring nails that refuse to give up without a fight.

Find the cheap ones not the ones designed for recycling. Those are the ones with the ring shank nails. As you note, they stay in one piece despite aggressive attack.
