I'm taking my first holiday for 18 years soon. Obviously, technology has moved on a bit since I last travelled so I could do with some advice on the best way to stay connected hardware-wise. I'll have my Android phone but I'm not relying too much on that for internet connection as even with a Sosh 'pass' it's only 10Gb. I'll keep that for airport/GPS/urgencies etc. I have an 'old' Toshiba laptop that I could take, but there's no programme for downloading books, so I am wondering about investing in a tablet or Kindle-type thing? Do tablets do most things that a laptop would do? I would very much like to avoid anything Apple TIA for recommendations!

Sorry I’m an Apple so I can’t help there, but a Kindle yes, I was reluctant at first and still only use it whilst on holiday, you can get some decent books on the daily offer, but recent and popular releases are as expensive as buying in hard copy. Lots of the books appear to be have written specifically for cheap deals on Kindle in the various genres, I don’t find the majority of them worth reading.

A lot of tablets don't have a SIM card slot. If it's mainly for reading on holiday, why not just download the Kindle app to your phone, and load a couple of books onto the device itself (it's what I did when I had to go to the UK earlier in the year).

I am just finishing a £1 a month for three months with Audible, I have really enjoyed it, I add free audio books to my library and make sure I download them to my phone using the wifi before travelling you get a free credit per month which is great and can normally download recent releases, I either listen directly from my phone or via some inexpensive (£30) wireless earphones. I have a fairly old Samsung Galaxy tablet that I download onto from Iplayer (using SurfShark a VPN for about €70 for two years) and other downloading services.

Too right! And hopefully dry and very sunny Guadeloupe. Thanks to all who replied so far. I know my phone will do most things, but the battery's getting tired and I don't really want to spend 2 weeks peering at a 7 x 15cm screen. Certainly not to read Perhaps should have added that I'll have WiFi access there although nowadays I suppose that's normal nearly everywhere

Oups! Trouble with the Livebox? It's looking more and more likely that I'll splash out on a reconditioned tablet (with 4G). Light, portable, could come in handy if phone is nicked (and vice versa). It doesn't seem worth buying a Kindle for just two weeks use Thanks all....

I got caught when I went to Oz recently and had to spend Long hours in saudi airports such as Jeddah.....I quickly racked up 60euros in charges which was then capped by orange, and my daughter explained to me what to do and what a d1ck'ead I had been......

Ah thanks for the tip, GAO I think that Guadeloupe is classed as France...I had a look at the Sosh website and it seems to be included in my forfait. Won't be phoning much, OH never answers the phone anyway . It's the internet use that will catch me out if anything. Going to arrange a supplementary 'pass', though. Be prepared, as the GGs say

I find my iPad does just about all I need to do when away. It’s very practical and efficient when travelling.

Do remember to switch the hotspot facility off when not in use ..

It has a SIM slot and more than ample memory for me to use as a 'recipe book' on a wall mount in my kitchen. I paid 120€ odd for a 32GB version.

Just looked at the site you recommended L D and there are some cracking deals on there, lots of wifi plus 4g (sim) models to choose from but please do not totally dismiss Apple products Houpla, I did for many years but they do make sense in the long run, phone, tablet, laptop all connected - seamless.
