I recently purchased a re-con tablet Samsung Tab A 10", classed as perfect, from www.backmarket.fr/fr-fr . It has a SIM slot and more than ample memory for me to use as a 'recipe book' on a wall mount in my kitchen. I paid 120€ odd for a 32GB version. please do not totally dismiss Apple products Houpla, I did for many years but they do make sense in the long run, phone, tablet, laptop all connected - seamless. Samsung are seamless too Can't bring myself to pay stupid prices for a status symbol. Someone gave me an iPhone once...it was dreadful, with appalling sound quality on calls. I gave it away.

I have a tired old 2015 iPad with the Kindle reader app but find it too heavy to hold for reading. Have just purchased the new Blackview Tab 60 8.68" Android tablet from Amazon.fr for €104,99. 6gb ram expandable to 12gb, 128gb storage expandable to 1tb with SD card. Also takes a sim card. Great build quality, picture quality with a reading mode and dual speaker sound. I use Lithium Pro ebook reader, just about the best e-pub reader. Thousands of free books on Z-Library. Best wishes from Toulouse.

You absolutely do not need (Cr)Apple products to connect multiple devices seamlessly and in fact introducing a (Cr)Apple device into an Android or Windows environment can create it's own problems. Q: How do you milk sheep? A: Bring out a new iPhone and charge €1300 for it!

Meaning no disrespect, but if I had the resources to afford a trip to Guadeloupe I wouldn't be worried about taking phone, tablet, laptop along for the ride. I would be looking forward to an escape from all the techno crap. Having to stay connected would be truly Death in Paradise.

The last time I went back to Plague Island the car broke down. We'd have been absolutely stuffed without smartphone and credit card. It surprised both of us how easy it was to organise flights back etc. Perhaps if you're staying with family it's different, but as an independant traveller, I want the security. No need to cart books, maps, GPS or camera around, either As for Paradise, I'd be going East again if all the best destinations hadn't been overrun by young Israelis and Russians and French regional airports did direct flights to SE Asia Hey ho....got to make the best of things.....

S'me again... Proud owner of a shiny, new (reconditioned) Samsung Galaxy tab. Just need some advice now about the best/ most economical way to download preferably free books. OH has an Amazon Prime account...would that be the way to go? I know that Kindle stuff is readable on Android gadgets and have checked out some favourite authors who are present and correct, so can't see any downside. If the worst came to the worst and there are verification problems with me using his account, I could perhaps take out a month's free trial of Prime in my name? I'm pretty good at remembering to cancel before it becomes payable What do you seasoned travellers think?

Let your oh log on to Amazon on your new machine and register it as a new device under his name, then with the kindle app you should have the whole library available.

Lots of books on Amazon prime. Once you’ve paid the monthly subscription then you’ve got a vast library to access. I read a lot and have found that it was cheaper to pay for the prime subscription than pay per book.

Yes, I saw that Lots of well-known authors too, which doesn't seem to be the case with a lot of the 'competitors'. As OH is already paying for Amazon Prime, I'll see if I can piggy-back on his account

Also look for the Magazines you can download, after the first copy they automatically download the next months, hundreds of titles, all included in your monthly subscription, happy reading.
