Looking to buy one. Any suggestions on make would be helpful. Mostly tiled floors.

I invested in a Shark after recommendation. It's well designed and very effective but finding it rather heavy to push around.

I have a shark too which is corded, I find it not very easy to use either although it is very effective. Heavy and cumbersome. As we are all on 1 level we use a robot too which is very effective but always seems to be where we want to be!!!

I bought a cordless Rowenta 25.2V Air Force Extreme about six years ago and it’s brilliant. Powerful, efficient, lightweight and reliable. The battery still holds its charge as when new. Highly recommended.

Mine is a vax pet, which is the lightest I found at the time. It is efficient, easy to manoeuvre, but battery charge isn't great. Sufficient for a couple of rooms, but not whole house. I do have it on boost all the time to get up the pet hairs which reduces the charge a fair bit.

Another vote here for cordless shark. Just needs to be thoroughly cleaned regularly or you lose suction.

As a former Dyson fan, I'd recommend you steer clear of their 'stick' cordless range. Appalling battery life and the replacements are worse. Just about to try out an Aonus (unfortunate name, but what the heck ) cheapie from Amazon. 5/5 reviews and at least if the battery gives out it'll be cheaper to chuck the vacuum cleaner. Tant pis for the planet....

We have a Dyson, forget which, exactly. It’s 5.5 years old and usually used as the main vacuum cleaner in our house in the UK - mostly on carpets but with hard floors in the bathroom, kitchen and utility room.
We bought it in a Dyson sale and have been very satisfied with it from the start - particularly easy when using it on the stairs and the upstairs bedrooms. If we were living on one floor I’d have tried a Shark because of the cost. I admit I’m not the most house-proud person, preferring to be in the garden etc, but our home is pretty clean and tidy.
The first thing we did was to check that the Dyson was switched to eco mode (or equivalent), otherwise a charge will last a very short time. Also, we bought an extra filter and change them over every month or so, washing the dirty filter and leaving it to dry until we need to change filters.
if we stayed as long in our apartment in France each year as we did before brexit I would probably have bought one for there; our little Miele has done well for 15 years of good use on our hard floors there (much more dusty than here and doors are open all year round), but it’s so much less of a chore with a Dyson or other stick brand, with unwinding the wire and fitting tube, and putting in and out if the cupboard, rather than just taking it down from the wall and hanging it back to charge while not needed.

Black and Decker sell one. Quite simply, do not buy it!

We don't find having to plug into the wall much of a problem so won't be tempted to join the rechargeable bandwagon. Check out the price of a replacement battery now, before you buy. Then decide how long you think the original will last.

@ Aardvark, two years ago we bought what we thought German made (?) quality. All my old Bosh drills and other electric tools (blue line) still working perfectly. Although I remembered our little Black&Decker battery (NiCad) vacuum cleaner, late seventies: after only two years almost no capacity, battery gone to see its maker. Can't happen with this brand....Sweet dreams: it gave about 20 minutes of autonomy, now only three...Battery replacement: next to impossible. The same as with our very clever smartphones: dumb design. Now looking for a little Parkside cordless cleaner with the same 20 V battery pack as in my Lidl cordless drill, the black one. Not available anymore this little vacuum cleaner, for several months already.

I don't know what the quality is like these days but my favourite cordless drill is a nice lightweight Bosch I bought in 1985. The batteries are still good enough for most jobs.
