On our arrival Friday night it's taken a turn for the worse, worked for about 5 minutes, then tripped the power, tried it again and an electrical bang emitted from near the burner, so i didn't try it a third time, someone is coming 0830 tomorrow morning to take a look, house is freezing apart from one room with the wood burner and no hot water......If its not fixable tomorrow, we may go back to the UK as its going to get colder this week. At least he should be able to see a fault easier now.........

That is very sad news. No hot water and reduced heating is difficult to cope with for more than a few days. We would probably go home and try to sort out a replacement with a reliable plumber/engineer. Is there a cheap hotel or gite nearby to give you a short period in the warm while you sort out a solution?

JohnnyD, I was just searching my external hard disks, several photos there about problems in the past with the 2200 series Tektronix scopes. The i nfamous RIFA capacitor in the mains filter: exploded....A more or less universal wiring diagram (Schaffner). Easy to repair, also for the DIY. I've got loads of resistors, capacitors here waiting to do something useful. Too far away I'm afraid. As usual it's all about component quality and the fight with the red pencil of guys who don't care too much about engineering and reliability. In this Schaffner filter a leaking C3 or C4 would have been a bridge to earth, enough current to trip the interrupteur différentiel of 30 mA or worse: the disjoncteur de branchement (500 mA). On closer inspection of your photo: this is a standard capacitor based component, all the internet shops have them. Don't call a plumber or an electrician, the choise is yours: several euros or more than hundred. Non, je n'ai pas ce type, on revient la semaine prochaine.... On closer inspection (part II) of my DIY Quad 33 pre-amp (1968) I discovered two little RIFA capacitors in my power supply. Transformer in mu-metal box.. Thx anyway for this heads-up... Temporary workaround: forget about the internal filter, a bypass intervention, make a straight through connection or as in your case cut it away and use a French equivalent of this external filter. Hoping that the self inflicted shock therapy didn't cause any collateral damage. Good luck and keep warm....

I may get one when i can, the repair guy said its fine and legal without, do i need to replace with an external? What do I have without it, noisy mains that radio hams (me) don't like? Anything else?

@ JohnnyD, these filters are there to take away noise, coming in from the mains or trying to escape from a switch-mode power supply. No harm done without this filter in your ligne Maginot around the electronics of your burner. These simple filters are promising more than that they can deliver. If you want real surge protection you should stop intruders already in your tableau électrique with better and faster reacting devices. Again a diagram. More reading stuff here. And welcome back in France for more than several cold days....

You have escaped almost unscathed. With hindsight and some specific experience we all might have checked that component at the start of your problems. In the short term you are warm and washed and we are also very happy for you.

@ Lurcher, indeed, Houston ground control to Major Tom communication is not always the same as being there with a set of electronic measurement instruments. Not to forget the quick visual inspection....

careful there. RA’s solution for the external filter is the wonderful schuko plug and not the bloody awful French type.
