One of the 8-ways mentioned in the link stuck in my mind. Firmware updates. Am I asking too much to have these things equipped with bugproof software before they are put on sale? Or has Microsoft set the industry standard for releasing things to the public before they are fully tested. The public are the testers (aka guinea pigs) that hopefully receive security updates before the flaw causes too many problems. And also run the risk that the "update" will brick their device and have to wait for a fix to fix the fix that broke it in the first place. Then at some point the OS will be changed to the point where the consumer has to dump his device and buy a new more powerful one because the wonderful new "update" won't run on it. Roll the dice people. This is the future.
Or instead of a voice command gadget, get off your butt and push a switch manually.

My grand-daughter travels by car constantly here and there for her job so she and her partner have made available remote access to their central heating to adjust the timer. So if she thinks she is going to get home earlier then she thought, and it has turned colder than previously advised, she can switch on the heating sooner than programmed. Super; but I still worry about the hacking of such apps, never mind the pertinent things you mention re 'updates' OS changes or upgrade. A possible perfect nightmare in my view.
