It is 64 years since National Service finished in the UK and survivors of it will now be few and elderly. Back in the day, we're led to believe that many who did their time came out with a trade and that their service had turned them into men. All in all NS was considered mostly to be very positive.
Times have changed and so have attitudes towards anyone being told they must do anything they don't want to. Perhaps men now no longer have feelings of patriotism or feel it their 'duty' to 'Fight for King and Country' as did their ancestors.
This proposed action is not something I'd like to be in charge of putting into place ............. but then I like to think I haven't been a party to transforming the UK into what it is now.

Veem I would imagine some would be prepared to die for king and country but as you say times have changed.
Some did come back with a trade but a lot did not come back and plenty others came back badly injured.
As you can see from the various wars that are on going just now no one wins except the weapon manufacturesrs

PTSD seems to have grown into quite an undustry; yes, there are people who do get it badly and need help but, I suspect many others who use it as an excuse. But if there is another major war involving the UK, I suspect that PTSD will be the least of the problems.
By the way, has the 25000 figure for Palestinian dead been confirmed independently or are the numbers from Hamas?

I would hope that the population is better educated now, so would be better positioned to make an informed decision rather then jump in on the patriotism bullshit.

I wasn't in the late 60's and I would be even less so today.
We had a strong suspicion that the war in Viet Nam was about money, not freedom. Time has proved we were right. Now we have the internet and the facts might be a little muddled these days by lying politicians but people who are bright enough to question the propaganda can separate the bullshit from the real motives.

I think there are still trenches being used in the Russian Ukraine special operation dispute, I think it would be even worse now with drones you propably would not see death coming. At least in the old day's you might have had a chance to shoot the begger running towards you but I think these days are mostly over. I would not wish it on anyone. |

If the King and the other Royals lead us into battle and they are at the front with the rest of us with the likes of Bojos kids at the front then it might be a different situation. As for running off to other countries its not so easy to stay there these days. The UK gov have wasted billions they could have used that to pay for a proper army rather than heating there second homes and stables. |
