Another French thread. Why does French cheese cost so much? How come the Dutch are allowed to sell Gouda which im sure is full of plastic waste texture wise? A good cheddar is cheaper and tastier than most other cheese here including a good Cantal.

Our local supermarkets stock the same brands of Brie and Camembert that we used to buy in France for about 75p more than Carrefour sell them for which is very reasonable considering they're imported.

Don't Diss Dutch cheeses. Some of it is tremendous
We have a friend visit each summer who brings 4 different cheeses vacuum wrapped at her local fromagerie (I don't know what that is in Dutch but it sounds like someone clearing their throat).
One she brought this year was like a really well aged comte but even nuttier.

Oude (sp?) Gouda - vieux Gouda - is a world away for the ordinary grease usually sold in France and the UK under the Gouda brand. The "throat clearing" cheese may well be Gouda. The G in Dutch is indeed very guttural.
No Cheddar suppliers within a 40km radius from us so we have to make do with what is available.
Did find a 36 month aged Comté for Xmas, which was very nice but cost a fortune. I think the kilogram price started with a 5!!

Up here in dep 03/18/23 you can get cheddar in most Intermarche, Achan, carefour or casino stores.

We recently treated ourselves to dinner at Les Grands Buffets at Narbonne where we tasted an exceptional 1000 day matured Gouda.

Gouda, produced in the Netherlands, milk from cows, not plastic from the chemical industry. And about the Mimolette cheese: buy French, already centuries ago the same old song. The Mimolette, created in the 17th century, is originally an imitation of a Dutch Edam. In France, foreign wares were banned by Jean-Baptiste Colbert's mercantilism. He believed the French nation should be self-sufficient. Language course Dutch, Part 1, see video. Personal advice for Mysty: don't eat the coating, only what is inside. But I must admit of course that there are many differences in individual taste perception. Do as you please..

One of the positives of coming to live here, for me, was never having to eat Cheddar ever again. Wensleydale and white, crumbly Lancashire I do miss a bit, but even Cantal jeune knocks spots off Cheddar

Not a great eater of cheese, but I do rather like Beaufort.

You just can't beat it for gratins or cheese on toast. So much more flavour than anything else. My local HyperU own brand is the best cheddar I've tasted here but it's a rare treat now as I mostly stick to chèvre.

Sorry, jardinière I know it's popular, but just don't like the taste. Never did. I love just about any cheese you care to name, but not Cheddar
