We hope to be visiting family in a couple of weeks in the UK and will want to bring some items back with us. I know the limits of approx £400 or is it Euros per person (travel by car/ferry/tunnel). I cannot locate the information (declaration etc) relating to this. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? I've just read that you are not allowed to bring paint back is that correct?
Thanks.

Paint would be a bit of a blow for us, where did you read that?

Phew, I was a bit worried for a minute, we had not heard you couldn’t take paint, anyone who tries to take paint on an aircraft deserves to have it confiscated really…..

A friend came over on Eurotunnel this morning. Her car is stuffed with personal items that she didn’t move to France just over a year ago. No one showed any interest in the contents of her car.

I was hoping that you could tell me what forms you had to complete if any for bringing things across. I want to bring across some family 'heirlooms', well they might be in about 100 years - baby cot and highchair for granddaughter to be as well as stocking up on some new items - shopping. Did you have to make an allowance for laptop/kindle in either direction?

Just being pedantic for a moment - depending on the airline small amounts of water based paints may be allowed in checked baggage (..e.g. artists paints/supplies).. I’d be more than fairly confident umpteen gallons of oil based paint for decorating use would not be allowable..

Did she fill out any forms or make a list? No she just picked up some bits and pieces she had stored there. My post was only an observation.

I came to France on the Eurotunnel a couple of weeks ago. There isn't even a place to check what you are bringing in to France, as above no questions about vehicle contents, I'm not even sure that it is the job of the border guard to make any customs enquiries.

Eurotunnel and Dover ferries have the French checks in the UK.

My sister once flew over with half a litre of some special paint, dispensed into 100ml bottles - and got through security with it!

We went out end of July via eurotunnel with Estate car well loaded, we had made lists of everything and taken photos had no problems. Returned home yesterday no issues just lots of changes to procedure at tunnel things like going through customs after being to the shopping area. Lots of bollards in use a bit of a maze.

So reading that, I think I can take 860 Euros worth of goods into France via the ferry, is that correct? There are two of us on the trip. Does that figure include UK vat on the prices of goods bought in the UK like paint etc? Or is it all excluding UK VAT
