So reading that, I think I can take 860 Euros worth of goods into France via the ferry, is that correct? There are two of us on the trip. Does that figure include UK vat on the prices of goods bought in the UK like paint etc? Or is it all excluding UK VAT No. A car on a ferry or train counts as a car (just like going over a bridge, I suppose?) so 2 x 300€. It would be the total cost incl VAT (as on the invoices) This (p13 onwards) is a more comprehensive leaflet www.douane.gouv.fr/sites/default/files/2021-01/19/Brexit_guide_voyageurs_travellers.pdf

It is what you paid so VAT is included. It can be useful to have receipts with you for near new items just in case you are challenged by customs.

OH and I were chatting today about a large collection (several hundred) of CDs in storage in UK that I would love to have here in France. They are all years old and there are no receipts. We assumed that we wouldn't be able to bring them over post Brexit.

Having travelled several times now since Brexit, with vehicles & removal trailers fully loaded and sticking out like a sore thumb and also keeping a close eye on any others who are pulled over which is even less than before Brexit I can say that for most if not all of the requests for info on here that they are very unlikely to be checked (how often did it happen to you before?) and unless you are clearly a smuggler or running a clandestine business you will not be asked to pay any duties.
For removals you simply (and it really is simple) fill out the Cerfa form which consists of writing your address ad ticking 4 boxes and making out a very cursory inventory, mine does not even have any values on it, for the few items of any value (machinery) I was going to agree a price with them but it has not been necessary.
You make a second signed copy which they retain, no duties are payable on your personal effects and after a year you are free to sell them on should you wish, the purpose of the form is that you sign that you understand they have the right to visit you and inspect (that you still have) the goods within the year.
You can déménage from the UK to France many years after becoming resident, in my case it was 16 years, if you were a French person claiming to do the same with a lorry load of saleable goods then they would want evidence of your time spet there, rental agreements, employment contracts etc, I'm sure you can work out the reasons for that without me explaining them.
If I were to find myself in Aardvarks position in the future, say I had left items with family or inherited something of value I would either just bring it over knowing that nothing has changed on the ground regardless of what has changed on paper or I would declare it as a déménagement which would be interesting as it would be my second!
For my déménagement there will be 4 journeys with a removal trailer, on paper I have 6 months to do these and everything should have been declared on the initial list submitted, in practice I have been adding stuff as I rediscover it and will continue to bring stuff over on the same documentation for ever and a day.
