I can’t quite decide if it is compulsory or not, has anyone travelled to France recently with just their current EHIC, or is insurance one of the bits of paper you need when you arrive?

I don't know of its a requirement or not, the rules change too often to keep track, so i have insurance outside of my EHIC which also covers me for amber list travel if its amber due to covid only, not any other reason.....its not expensive for peace of mind, i think i got 18 months cover for both of us for about 70 quid total........

I never travel without separate travel insurance, wherever I go.
That’s a very good price, Johnny.

I was under the impression that you had to have repatriation insurance, which EHIC has never provided. Not sure what the UK version is now called but you know what I mean.

EHIC, now renamed GHIC (Global Vs Europe) covers basic healthcare. As above it doesn't cover repatriation.
Whilst additional travel insurance is sensible, it isn't mandatory for holiday makers. Nobody will check your documents, unless of course you need medical treatment.

Thanks because of existing conditions my quote for the two of us was over £400 for four weeks, so you can understand my reticence, I think I’m going to chance it.

Repatriating ashes is not expensive but air ambulance comes a bit pricey.
Joking apart, age(d) doesn't help - a quote (Staysure) for myself, with mild hypertension , and wife, with relatively minor declarable condition, is £500+ for two weeks.

Last time my friends (around 70) went away - just over 2 years ago - he came back in a Lear jet, paid for by insurance.
Made me think (not that I'd even consider it without insurance, particularly post-Brexit).
