Whats Apped my cousin Zak the other day. He took early retirement as a project manager geologist working for Shell. Of course he has a good pension, just back from visiting his daughter in OZ. So he decided to visit friends who live in London for a few days. He said he found an excellent restaurant, superb food and paid - £40 for a bottle of house wine . He has a friend close to where he lives near the Cairngorm mountains. This friend started making cidre as a hobby but then turned it into a business. Sometimes Zak helps him and gets paid in cider - it retails for £10 a bottle. It isn't just the property prices that are insane. There's a reset coming and it won't be pretty.

I have never been rich enough to lose sight of what really matters in life. There are times when I think I might enjoy spending vast amounts of money on non-essentials but I have a mean streak that remains dominant and would spoil the effect.

AAh the 'great reset' conspiracy ....next you'll be on the 'great replacement'. Jodrell Banker.

you make it sound as if this is something new.
More than 15 years ago, to celebrate one of my sisters significant birthdays, her husband organised a posh dinner at a London restaurant for her and the family. Limo from home to the restaurant etc.. The wine list was excellent and very long and for some reason I was nominated to choose the wines.
I chose a couple that I knew well as being excellent quality but not expensive in France. Indeed compared with the restaurants other offerings they were not high up the list of prices there either. Nevertheless wine that I had bought for €3.20 a bottle in the supermarket was selling for over £20 Same producer, same grape variety, same vintage.
In fairness perhaps I think I found it before it became noticed but I doubt the sales price had risen much in the two years since I had bought mine. Today the current vintage sells for in excess of €9 but no longer in the local supermarket.

I wouldn't call that a mean streak lurcher. I have in the past in the UK bought expensive bottles of wine only to be disappointed - the difference in quality simply didn't equate with the cost and I would get far greater satisfaction using the money donated to sanctuaries for wildlife and animal rescue.

Today the current vintage sells for in excess of €9 but no longer in the local supermarket. It didn't take me long after moving to France to suss out which supermarkets employed really knowledgeable buyers. I've never liked Carrefour to do a general shop in but for two things - wine and reasonably large quantities of herbs that I like. Lidls is a joke with occasionally a decent bottle, don't be fooled by the so called 'award' winning stickers, they are a joke. Aldi is a no-no but once a few years ago they had a really good St.Chinian - Saint Cels @ €3.69. The character changed between 16/17/18C. As is normal for the German s/markets instead of adjusting the price when the producer wants a little more they dropped it for another St.Chinian that is crap, it just sits there and doesn't sell. It's no good my organising a trip to the estate as if I buy in quantity it will do my liver no good at all - if I've got it I will drink it.

Our local carrefor was good for wine but recently shrunk the wine section size and range. Use intermarche as although leclerc has wider range layout is shambolic. Couple of good local wine stores but dearer than supermarkets obviously

There used to be a shop called big Bazaar in our big town that sold end of line stuff, wine included. Our neighbours used to visit them with a corkscrew and a couple of glasses, they purchased a bottle of each type took them out to car opened them if they were good returned and purchased a box or two of the ones they liked.
