Open picture in Gallery.
Tap on pencil ✏️ icon bottom left.
Tap on 3 dots top right.
Select resize.
You can then select the percentage of resize. I usually use 20%.
Select Done down the bottom.
Then save top right.
You can always in future revert to the original (next to save).
Hope this helps someone.

Thanks LPT .. altho I go on often (only on behalf of keeping the forum from disappearing down the plughole) about the data-wise size of photos I have no idea how to post a photo myself. But I might just be tempted by your (seemingly simple) explanation. One question .. if the resulting photo is posted on here but is still deemed too big data-wise can the poster resize their photo on their phone so that it might be reposted on here ?

As an exercice I reduced a 5.5 mb photo using the above method to 380kb. The only way to further reduce it is to crop it using the edit function. That took it down to 128kb. You do then lose some image quality.
I've posted a few times on here how to post photos direct from your device, last time (obliquely) in a thread about moving to France.

Thanks for the method. Is it possible that my Android phone does not have the facility to re-size a photo. I have not been able to follow your instructions and there is no evidence of a resizing command. After selection a photo from the gallery, I can see a pencil and three dots at the first stage. Choosing the pencil takes me to an editing page which does not offer three dots. Choosing the three dots on the first page produces a drop-down which includes edit but nothing else that maybe useful. I go around in circles. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

It has a myriad of editing, fixing, creating and adjusting tools but nowt as simple as a pencil and resize doesn't get a mention - tho crop does appear. Most people seem to use additional software, now I know why. But a huge thank you LPT as you made me look at my photos .. I have had a much needed clear out too 😊

Is it possible that my Android phone does not have the facility to re-size a photo. Is it possible that this depends on which phone you have? I'm wondering this because when I try to follow the instructions I don't even have a pencil at the first stage! I can't find a resize facility. I usually use an online programme if I need to do that.

My post crossed Sue's. It must be the phone that makes the difference. This is what I use to resize: imageresizer.com/

Glad I at least made people look😁 After all your comments I looked at the info bit of the three dots once I've selected edit (using the pencil icon) It appears on my Samsung android I have an app available via the Gallery app called photo editor. Maybe those of you with android phones can download it?
Apologies for my OP not being as useful as I thought it was going to be.

No apology needed at all .. exchange of ideas is what this forum is about, and I for one have certainly learnt quite a bit today. I have also discovered a lot more photos needing attention than I thought .. either editing or removing.

The thread has been useful: for me it might nudge me towards a new, better phone. My current model is one marketed by Vodafoneat a relatively low price. It is not the first time I have discovered it is unable to perform as well as those of friends who also wanted to avoid another Apple device in their lives. I have studied the downloaded handbook and found it lacks features including the image reduction. I have been using a free app which does the job with a bit of wasted time.

The thread has been useful: for me it might nudge me towards a new, better phone. My 'new' phone is a huge disappointment. It wasn't one of the pricey ones but twice as expensive as the one it replaced. It's inconsistent and now the screen has stopped responding from time to time and I have to keep tapping. It's enough to make you want to go analogue!

It's enough to make you want to go analogue! It is easy to forget that smartphones today really are computers .. all singing all dancing computers. My son's most recent Android phone was over £800 .. but to him it is a necessary price to pay. There are lots over £1000 - which I find mind-boggling. My latest phone suits me but it cost twice as much, at €399, as the first one I bought 7 years ago, they are not cheap. It still lacks some features I could use. Next time I think I might think about buying a reconditioned model .. we'll see in a few years time.
