Following a stay in our local hospital my wife was sent off with a prescription for pills that will cover the next month. I was not sure how the system worked but neede the medication immediately. I isited our local pharmacie and duly given the three boxes of pills. This was followed by a discussion in French asking for payment unless I had a green card. We are UK residents and just have a secondaire. With all the knowledge carried by the forum membership could you tell me if the payment was normal and is it something a GHIC card would cover or my travel insurance would reimburse me. Thank you.

They may have been referring to the carte de tiers payant mutualistse, which is green. We were given one of these at the beginning of the year, I think. This has to be shown at the pharmacie along with the carte vitale. Once it has been shown and registered they don't need it again. If you go to another pharmacie you would have to "register" there as well. This was from our health insurance providers MGEN.

I am not sure whether the GHIC card covers medications, but you could have tried that.
Failing that pay up; get a receipt - probably a feuille de soins (sp); then send it to the NHS for reimbursement.

When I was working on French campsites for a UK holiday company some years ago I took a number of our clients to the local CPAM to reclaim the charges for treatment via the EHIC. Those that reclaimed on return to the UK via Newcastle waited months for the refund.

We no longer have a CPAM office in town, so we post our feuilles de soins to the nearest office and the refund turns up in our bank account pretty quickly.
If it’s a serious illness/accident, the whole lot of feuilles for everything is sent to our travel insurance company, who take ages, but are fair, don’t try to wriggle out of paying up.

Thanks for that practical advice. We are back in UK now and will continue to work with our travel health insurance company to cover our prescription charges. Just as we were leaving for the ferry 8 opened our mail box at the gate and discovered a letter from 5he ambulance company asking for 250€. I hope that is refundable.
