France has chosen to evacuate not only the French working and living in Afghanistan but also those Afghans who work[ed] for France.

France started evacuating Afghans working for them in mid July. So when Dominic Raab said he didn’t see it coming he really probably does mean it was only him that didn’t see it coming....

Good to see that the UK is also taking in its Afghan support workers.

The Dutch Foreign minister also didn't see it coming. She was at a dinner party when Kabul fell.

I’m not sure what exact time Kabul fell but TBH I’d cut somebody a bit of slack if they were eating but handy for the office at whatever the time it was. OTOH (as is alleged) playing the “Do not disturb, I’m on holiday” card, and delegating a v v important telephone call to your deputy/junior when the call is to your counterpart, in an area of the world where relative rank/status is pretty darned important, absolutely smacks of incompetence, poor judgment and laziness. ……but then with this cabinet would you expect anything to be done (or not done) any differently? Edit to add:

OH just read and article about a British couple that are trying to get out. All attempts to get instructions from the British embassy have failed. They are told the only way is to get to a particular hotel, from which they will be taken to the airport under guard. There are three Taliban checkpoints stopping this couple from getting to the hotel. Even after showing documents they were manhandled and told if they return they will be killed.
Its not only the Americans that should be ashamed, but the British as well. Having said that, knowing that Afghanistan has been a war zone for the last 20 years why would anyone actually go there in the first place?

Amazing what a decent criticism in the right place can achieve, isn't it.

Having said that, knowing that Afghanistan has been a war zone for the last 20 years why would anyone actually go there in the first place? More like 200 years, or even 2000 plus if you go back to Alexander the Great!!! That said the impression I had was that parts around/in Kabul and the south east of the country had calmed down or normalized, perhaps more than I think many people realize or was being reported in the press. Certainly a lot technical type contract work was being done by westerners. For example for many years Air Traffic Control was mainly done by American civilians who at one time were doing I think 12 or 18 month unaccompanied tours and in my last day job it wasn’t at all unusual to be carrying some passengers on flights out of the UK to Dubai who had onwards connections to Kabul with the likes of Flydubai.. I can see why the numbers of Westerners that need to be got out are as high as they are, but even so I wouldn’t have been rushing to set up permanent home there.
