Hearing today that people are being turned away from airports because of the expiry date on passports, pre Brexit the expiry date on the passport was valid in the EU, but post Brexit it is 10 years from the issue date of the passport, so even though the passport has not expired, it is not valid for entry to the EU. There are many reasons your passport expiry date may be beyond 10 years from the intital issue date......so please check yours before travel.....
These brexit benefits just keep on hitting us.......

And generally you have to have at least 90 days validity left on those 10 years before entry to Schengen is permitted.

This link allows you to check the current length of the validity of your passport - www.gov.uk/check-a-passport-travel-europeThe new rule based on passport issue date rather than expiry date doesn't apply to UK passport holders who have provable permanent residency in an EU country.

"valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave France, or any other Schengen country".
so if staying for the full 90 days without a visa the passport will need at least 6 month validity on entry.

That was just one example of how the 'news' was disseminated, it featured on the TV news a number of times and widely published elsewhere. This Guardian published this on Sept 14th 2018 and no doubt it would have been in other UK rags at the same time or very shortly after. Moneysavingexpert pre-empted the Guardian by a day or two. The real reason people have been caught out then is because they had their heads up their rectums!

This Guardian published this on Sept 14th 2018 and no doubt it would have been in other UK rags at the same time or very shortly after. Moneysavingexpert ( published 12 September 2018) pre-empted the Guardian by a day or two. The real reason people have been caught out then is because they had their heads up their rectums! Be realistic fair, another , the articles and advice you've cited were published in September 2018 and September 2019; those people who actually read them were probably not thinking at that time of a trip to Europe almost two or three years later. As for the texts, the article states " will be sent (not "were sent") to those who provided their mobile number when they applied for their current passport [but n]ot everyone provides a mobile number, and contact details may have changed".
It is also highly probable that the great majority of the British tourists and travellers are not regular readers of Government websites, The Guardian, or Money Saving Expert; even if they were, I doubt they could remember what they read almost 3 years ago when it wasn't, at that time, important to their future travel plans.
People have been caught out, as you put it, because Brexit royally fucked up the lives of those who didn't vote for it, and the lives of many of those who did, and they are now paying the cost.

I did say my link was just an example but if you care to Google "uk passport validity 10 years" you'll find innumerable links to where this info has been published ranging from 2018 when it first came to light right up to the current date, including the popular UK tabloids, so I repeat that there really is no excuse for anyone getting caught out.
The 10 year max. validity has of course been the norm for non EU travellers for a very long time.
