See my second reply after the line-editing one for your last question.
Thank posts crossed. Now sorted
Good, was it the theme you were using?

beejay, the wide spaces at the side, was it the theme you were using or something else causing it?

Yes, it was in TD blue. I hadn't changed the theme so TD blue was what appeared when I signed up to TOFF.

Can anybody explain what purpose the "shoutbox" serves? It showed up at the foot of the recent posts page so l asked the same question in the 'shoutbox' without an answer. If it's called a Shoutbox l thought it would be a place to 'shout' i.e, type using capital letters to emphasize a point but it would appear to be a place where members can gossip and reveal info about other members - perhaps it would be better named 'Gossipbox'

Just don't take it too seriously. You now have to to join the group to use it so caveat emptor.

By the way, beejay, what theme have you changed it to now, out of curiosity?

It's just an ongoing chat, non specific thread related. No one is obliged to join the group or join in.

It's now called Live Chat because it's not for shouting, and to join the group who can see it (it's hidden because the concensus of opinion was that people didn't want to see it at the bottom of every page): Profile>Groups, then click the option Join Group on the right against the relevant Group.

Yes, I've gathered that, but I'd still like to know why there is the Masonic equivalent of a society within this forum where messages are passed which are only legible to those who join. What's the problem with saying anything on your mind on this supposedly friendly forum?

OK but why did it ever have to be at the bottom of every page? You have catagories for everything else which are there to be viewed or disregarded by all members but all of a sudden you introduce something akin to a secret society demanding signing in to gain 'special' entry to view.
Makes no sense to me.

I apparently am the third member of the 'Live Chat' group, along with FFS and Lapourtaider, but l haven't got a clue what added value we get that isn't available on the Forum. Perhaps all will become clear given a bit of time but for the moment it does seem pretty pointless.

Well. I just joined because I was curious, but I can’t see anything different…

The 'Shoutbox' as it is called, is a built-in feature of every forum created under the ProBoards umbrella, whether that forum's name has a URL ending in freeforums.net, proboards.com, or boards.net. In the Forum Settings page of the Admin menu, it says this above the controls for the Shoutbox: I enabled it, which lead to this thread; as a result I disabled it. I created a separate Sidebar with a chat option on it for those who were interested, which lead to this current thread. I then sought help from the ProBoards Support forum (here, if anyone's interested) to create something that met the criteria of those who wanted to use it, I had replies which helped and acted on them; that is where we are today.
Those who want to use it can, those who don't want to can choose not to. It's not secret, it's not special, and it's certainly not something worth getting worked up about; as the quote above says, it "allows users to easily and quickly chat with each other", nothing more, nothing less.
