OK but why did it ever have to be at the bottom of every page? You have catagories for everything else which are there to be viewed or disregarded by all members but all of a sudden you introduce something akin to a secret society demanding signing in to gain 'special' entry to view.
Makes no sense to me.
The 'Shoutbox' as it is called, is a built-in feature of every forum created under the ProBoards umbrella, whether that forum's name has a URL ending in freeforums.net, proboards.com, or boards.net. In the Forum Settings page of the Admin menu, it says this above the controls for the Shoutbox: I enabled it, which lead to this thread; as a result I disabled it. I created a separate Sidebar with a chat option on it for those who were interested, which lead to this current thread. I then sought help from the ProBoards Support forum (here, if anyone's interested) to create something that met the criteria of those who wanted to use it, I had replies which helped and acted on them; that is where we are today.
Those who want to use it can, those who don't want to can choose not to. It's not secret, it's not special, and it's certainly not something worth getting worked up about; as the quote above says, it "allows users to easily and quickly chat with each other", nothing more, nothing less.
Humour me & explain how this allows any member to chat quicker than posting a reply on the 'normal' forum. I've just looked at your above post & 6 minutes later I'm 'chatting' about it. (well it would have been if I was not interupted) This 'chat' could now quickly continue if we both continued to be logged on but would be useless if nobody saw your post. Please accept that any comments I make are made with good intent as I know, from previous experience how forum owners become attached to their 'baby' & can construe any comments as criticism, which this certainly is not. You have produced at very short notice, a platform that all agree is very good & is well appreciated but I'm just struggling to understand why you think another quasi secret sub forum, which members have to agree to enter, helps. You've already turned a sows ear into a silk purse but adding glitter just ain't necessary.
I'm certainly not getting worked up about anything just adding my comments which I hope you can take in the intended spirit. Looking at the take up for this feature it would appear I'm not the only member who's not that interested . Personally I'd never join any sub forum that didn't allow everything posted to be read by all.

Apologies in advance for the swearing in this reply.
Humour me & explain how this allows any member to chat quicker than posting a reply on the 'normal' forum. Q: Anything decent on the telly tonight chez toi? A: Nope, just the usual crap The above hardly merits its own thread, does it? I'm just struggling to understand why you think another quasi secret sub forum, which members have to agree to enter, helps. For fuck's sake, how many times do I have to repeat it? It's not a "quasi secret sub forum": everybody knows about it, anybody can join it, but not everybody wants to see it. You've already turned a sows ear into a silk purse but adding glitter just ain't necessary. Disagree with you there, a glittery silk purse is much more attractive. And I'm not sure it was a sow's ear in the first place. Personally I'd never join any sub forum that didn't allow everything posted to be read by all. Anything posted in the Live Chat can be read by anyone who chooses to join in and read it, even without contributing, so that argument doesn't hold water.

You could actually read live chat if you weren’t signed up for it

The live chat from the link at the top I can read ,but I could also read the one along the bottom of the page that’s now disappeared even though I wasn’t signed up

I took a democratic unilateral decision to dis able the one at the bottom of the page. We don't need two of them and the other one is open to anyone.

I think the blue/white 'chat' icon at the bottom right of the screen (on my tablet anyhow) is an excellent idea .. it announces that there is chat facility available, for those who want to avail themselves of it .. plus you can ignore it if you choose to and/or are not inclined to join in.
Are you trying for the innovation medal of the year FFS 😉

That's exactly the idea, suein56. What's more, it shows, by means of a notication icon in red, that there has been activity in the chat box. The chat, if you click the chat bubble, opens on top of the forum page you're in; click the 'x' to close it and you're back on the forum page.
