I have transferred pictures from the OH's ipad to the computer in the past without problems. Trying to do the same today, microsoft is throwing a hissy fit.
I can view the pictures as thumb nails on the computer. I can open a single picture on the computer, but if I then try to open a subsequent one I get the message that the new picture cannot be opened because the file type is unsupported or the file is corrupted. If I shut down the link and start again, I can open the supposed corrupted file but no others.
If I try and save any of the files that I have opened, I get the message that the files are corrupted or the file type is unsupported. The same if I try and copy paste the image.
All the files are .jpg so there should be no issue of file type support.
Anyone got any ideas?

I had a similar problem yesterday transferring from iPhone to Win10. When I tried to reopen the alleged corrupt file it was OK. Try emailing the picture to yourself and open it on your pc .

exile: you don't say what program you are trying to use to open the jpg on your PC (or which operating system). Have you tried a different program?
IrfanView is reliable.

I am just looking at them in the files. I can (could) access them by double clicking the image and that then opens the image in Photos - which as I wrote works for just one picture at a session. But I cannot copy - from there or from the thumbnails in the files. I just get a blank view taking zero storage capacity plus the message.

Sounds like a Windows problem.
Have you tried rebooting?
Have you run CCleaner?
Have you run sfc /scannow

I suspect it is more likely that Apple have changed something in their latest update as I have the same problem. If I email the image from my iphone there is no problem viewing the image.

Having just done a quick search, it does seem to be a problem Apple have introduced. I didn't find any obvious solutions. Converting the jpg images to png inages should get round the problem.

Thanks for that Elsie.
How do I change the format to .png? I cannot see a way to change it on the ipad.
Around 1000 pictures to transfer and back up so the email suggestion is not a practical solution.

I would try IrfanView on the PC first. There is File | Batch conversion/rename. All you need to do is to select the directory then the files. Select the Output Format as png and Start batch.
I know nothing about iPads. There ought to be an option somewhere or an app you can install.

Is it to do with photos downloaded to an iPad from the cloud? If so there’s a way to download them as a jpeg before saving that to a PC.

No these are pictures held on the iPad but the storage capacity is beginning to reach its limit hence the need to transfer.

Try a Leef iBridge
I have used an older version of one of these to transfer iphone and iPad photos to my PC. A very handy piece of kit. You can transfer any file size - so no reduction in picture quality either.
