This article is misleading, it gives the impression that if you live in one of the 48 departements its obligatoire to put on winter tyres. That is not the case take this as an example departement 84 .If you live in, say ,Avignon on the banks of the Rhone ,where you are more like to be flooded out then snowed in.Nobody is going to ask you to put snow tyres on.Eye catching headlines with no proper explainations are trade marks of the connnextion .I'm not saying that you won't have to have winter tyres or have chains with you in certain parts of these departements but put it into perspective.

I have 4wd and winter tyres for cantal and skiing in Scotland. However snow socks are really good for occasional use although they wear quickly if driven on tarmac with no snow cover. I find chains much more of a faff - especially if trying to fit when really cold - gloves get in way and fingers stick to metal!

Never tried the socks but I agree about chains.
If you have them it really is important to try putting them on and taking them off in the summer. Finding out how it's done in a layby, with the wind howling and the snow falling, holding a torch in your mouth while the instructions do their best to fly away in the wind is not a pleasurable experience.

The article isn’t misleading; it states: “rules that cars in the towns of some mountainous areas must be fitted with “special equipment” for the winter period between November 1 and March 31. “The prefects of 48 departments situated in the mountains, whether in the Alps, Corsica, the Massif Central, the Jura, the Pyrenees or the Vosges Massif, must set out a list of the towns in which vehicles should be appropriately equipped for the winter,” the law adds. “ It states “some mountainous areas” and “set out a list of the towns”. That was why the title of the thread is: “Winter tyres, Nov - end of March in parts of 48 departments”. As we were planning to drive to the south of France, the article particularly caught my eye.

The social media in France have amplified some aspects of this winter tyre "framework" legislation and present them as the whole story and they continue to do so. Others try to discover with close reading what really is gong on, one of the many articles in the French press as published by France 3. There is still room for investigative journalism, although many journalists are supposed to speed write articles. What took you so long? Next time it will be the exit door, excuses about having to slow read the difficult language of legislation will not be accepted.

Something to bear in mind for anyone either caught up in making the change, or wish to make it by choice, is that tyre pressure monitoring sensors (if fitted or car is newer than 2014) will have to be added to the cost as I think it is an offence not to have these if designed so.

Only if its an active and not passive system, ie one with the transponders in the valves, it's a very good point though for those who have all the bells and whistles.
No doubt a visit to the main dealer to be reamed for having them paired or coded will be on the menu!

Here in the Lot, the prefecture has said that no communes or roads will be subject to this law, despite being one of the 48 departements listed.

Tyre fitting shops are quite capable of removing a refitting tyres without disturbing the TPMS units on the wheels. I have had winter tyres fitted and removed and also a new set of tyres fitted in that way without problems.

I believe that Hal was referring to people budgeting for a set of winter wheels & tyres.

48 départements though?
Article was behind a paywall so I could not read it to see if it was yet another false headline.
So many people put links up to Connexions articles, it feels like I am in a minority not being a subscriber.
I couldn't read either as I don't subscribe to Connexion either. Thanks for the gouv link
