Terrible news about 7 people who drowned in the Med yesterday. I read the headlines and thought they must be people struggling to get to France by boat. Poor people, I thought, trying to escape oppression or to make a better life for themselves and their families. But no. It seems that they were older people at the coast having fun in the waves in the stormy seas, who were caught up and swept away by the terrible strength of the waves. The dead people and others struggling in the water were brought to shore by the bravery of others on the beaches and the emergency services. The authorities had to close some beaches to prevent more people entering the sea for pleasure. I felt even more shocked after I had read further. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-58579407www.midilibre.fr/2021/09/16/journee-noire-six-morts-par-noyade-sur-le-littoral-de-lherault-9792661.php

I felt really gutted for the young man who rescued the man of 71, got him to the shore, but who then died of drowning in spite of best efforts to save him. That young man is going to be shaken to the core. I've seen daft people having trouble when the sea gets choppy .. circumstances can change in a few seconds in the sea. Locals know this but visitors don't always see the danger.

Even though the beaches are no longer surveilled, the appropriate flags are still flown. At Adge the police municipale this morning were on the beach getting surfers out who were in the water despite the red flag. An arrêt is in place interdit de baignade.

Quite right too, thank you for posting that reassurance, Lapourtaider. Those who’ve gone out there after people have drowned are just mad - and, very sadly, put others at risk.
