From 4 October, amber countries will no longer exist and anywhere not on the red list will be considered green. Changes also to vaccination requirements and pre-travel testing.

Do you think the picture of Grant Shapps, and his name in big letters on it, on the ledge behind the great man is to help him remember who he is?

Good news for me, old rules for trip at end Sept but next one should be easier - unless they're in full lockdown by then

There appears to be little change. The departure test in France will no longer needed after Oct 4 but a day 2 PCR test applies on arrival in England until the end of October and then it's replaced by a Lateral Flow Test which is slightly cheaper (?) Passenger Locator Form still needed.

We may delay our return until 5th Oct to avoid paying for 2 PCR tests here in France, I could buy paint with that

You can have either for pre-departure test.

I agree but every little thing feels like a bonus. No pre-departure test + cheaper test on day 2 when travelling from France - 2 bonuses for the price of one

When travelling to U.K. I don’t think it is clear yet what sort of day 2 test is required for double vaccinated - PCR or lateral flow- post 4 Oct

Just to be clear, these changes in rules currently only apply to England. Scotland, Wales and N Ireland have yet to decide if they will also change the rules. Indications are that Scotland may not make any changes at this time.

PCR test until "the end of October" was reported. Presumably, a PCR test will still be acceptable in place of the LFT after the date set for the change?

I would have thought so if you have more money than sense. The reason for moving to LFT is to reduce the cost of testing.

I was thinking of those who need to order tests in the near future. As LFTs are not showing on the .gov list yet they will have to order day 2 PCR tests but LFTs may become the specified test after they leave the UK.
I left my decision until the last minute and ordered tests online, late Sunday, with Nationwide Pathology @ £40 and they arrived this morning, Tuesday. This company was not on lists I looked at last week so may be a new addition with a reasonable price for PCR tests.
