Went to a Leroy on Thursday and picked up a pack of engineered flooring that was €40 psm. got it home, its not great, and where there were defects in the wood, they have used black filler, bizarre......so the boards have black streaks in them, the guy who is doing some work in our house said there was a wood factory about 15 mins drive from us, he gave us directions. we found it, just a site in the middle of nowhere, wandered around for a bit and eventually a guy approached us and we described what we wanted, he gave us some samples, then he drove us to the main office where we met the boss, everyone was really helpful and the samples look great. the price he quoted ended up being only 3 euros different form the Leroy engineered stuff, we will probably place an order, with a 4-5 week wait for the boards to be cut.
Any gotcha's doing it this way direct with a factory?

No factories around here, only farms. And we've got our own chickens so not much help.

We did the same for pallets here in Spain when we needed 15 for outdoor furniture creation for the common area around the pool at a hotel... No problems at all.. Always better to go to the source.
The only problem you might run into is delivery date maybe off by a few days or weeks.

Any gotcha's doing it this way direct with a factory? Is the devis in writing? How much up front? Is the wood seasoned and correct for the job? I could go on.

I suggest you make sure the back of the planks are scored to prevent bowing. If they T&G them (that's not tonic and gin) make sure the ends are T&G ed. Store them in the room where they are to be used for at least 2 months before laying, they will shrink or swell according to the temperature and humidity of that room. they sometimes champher the edges of the T&G on the top surface, you can ask them not to do this if you prefer a good butt joint that can be sanded down later. Check they are all the same width exactly and if not (to the half mm) sort them into widths to lay in one stroke otherwise there will be gaps along the stroke. been there and got the tee shirt.

That's the ticket. But don't acclimatise the planks on top of the radiator.

Go for it JD, so much better using a local firm and with a recommendation from Mrs Archy.
