We have grown 80% of our own veg for a long while, plus fruit ,nuts and meat ( and wood for heating) . The crisis that is arriving, is the cost of oil that increases the cost of everything that is available in the shops, and not just veg. As far as water is concerned , we have our own spring , that is connected to our house and we use to water our garden and give to our animals. We are in a farming community , the farmers here are very worried about the coming Winter, a lot may go broke .

Use it to their advantage.
Something is wrong when an kilogram of apples cost €1 to produce in Spain but 3-4xs that amount in France for the same apple.

Why do you find that an apple should cost the same , if it is packed ,stored and transported (perhaps 1000 km ) from where it is produced to a country that produces three times the amount of the same apples. I have never seen Spanish apples in our local supermarkets , only French produce.. The farmers where we live have difficulty in earning enough to live. What would you have them do if more of them were forced to quit by the price of fuel and transport this Winter ?

The grass has started growing like billyo , so things can be planted/sown in the veg garden this weekend . Lack of pollinators again this year, but the pear trees seem to have been pollinated , but no peaches or plums , maybe the apples will do better , as some are late flowering .

Not sure on that the threads title says what are you doing in the garden and although it is not my personal garden which going by the rules of the forum I would still be allowed to post the pictures. As one can see there is a difference in the garden it has been cleared and cut so one would have thought as one does it was indeed in the right thread. Anyway there is no thread that says what is getting demolished next month

Buy yourself a size 1 sable artists paint brush. Go round the open blossom and do a self pollination. Seriously it does work

Seriously it does work I'm sure it works , if I had the time , I would do it , but at this time of year there are other priorities . We usually get some sort of fruit , we have quite a variation of fruit trees. I find it sad that the Spring buzzing in the trees has disappeared .

Where is NA 87, cernunnos? Although the average temps are down again this year, we have had bees and flies buzzing about from Feb onwards here in 47. Would it be worth sowing or planting some early-flowering stuff to attract pollinators like they do in the vineyards? Phacelia tanacetifolia is a lovely hardy annual sold as green manure but it's an absolute bee-magnet if you let it flower

We have a pile of early-flowering and all year flowering trees and shrubs . We even have a wild bees nest in a hollow tree in front of our house, but the insect life has really decreased in the time that I live here. One of our neighbours is a beekeeper , but has lost a lot of his hives the past Winter , so it could be the reason for the change in Zoom? We have noticed too that there are a lot less frogs singing in the evenings , less frog spawn in our many ponds , when I first bought our house/property , the frog noise at night was enormous . Everything is decreasing except for the wood ant nests in our woods , there are many more than there used to be . Why , I don't know ? Could be the sudden temperature changes , hotter in the day and colder at night?

Could be all the chemicals you and your farmer friends use for the decrease in insect life in your "farming" area..

Ah...thought HV but could have been Northern Australia That decrease in wildlife is worrying! Our frogs are two months late getting the chorale together this year, but there's no decrease in numbers. Ditto wasps, bees, flies and frelons. Not seen a bat, yet. Nature's not static, though, is it? Predators come and go, the balance changes constantly. The only interference on my part here is an attempted, permanent wipe-out of ragondin and wasp control once they've wiped out the aphids. Slugs and snails get hand-picked and chucked on neighbour's fallow field for the birds. Hedgehogs, now....I've rarely seen a trace of hedgehogs. No idea why!

Could be all the chemicals you and your farmer friends use for the decrease in insect life in your "farming" area.. Sorry to disapoint you ibis , we have been organic farmers on this land for more than 30 years . Our property is Non-chasse ,the stream is Reserve de Peche, all the land is Reserve LPO and our " fonds " are classified Zone humide protégée and we have just been accredited as HVE .
We do "our bit" for the "environnement"

I gave up on the ragondin after killing 27 in one Winter , there are a pair that habits our lake , but they don't seem to produce more young , I think that a hunter one lake up from us has been shooting them , at times I hear gunshots out of season in the evenings. Wasps I see as friends , they help in the politunnel , we have the dangly leg type , very brave they are too , if you get too close! We have hedgehogs , because I have found a few dead and saw a female carrying a baby down our drive last year . The squirrels have all disappeared after the hurricane that went through here in 2000. Plenty of bats still , various shapes and sizes , the pipistrelles sleep behind our open shutters
