This wooden structure has a stone roof on top of it, plenty of beams. Built in 1800 something. If you click the picture you can make it bigger.

You'd be hard pressed to find a carpenter today who could manage that in the time it took back then.

I would suggest that at the time they ran out of beams and bodged it with off- cuts.

Not a nail in sight all joints and pegs brilliant workmanship I had a similar barn and read up on it most of the wood was green and therefore soft warping and shrinking had to be taken into consideration to make a strong structure

Last weekend during one of our group walking expeditions we passed a newly restored cottage and the owner gladly regaled us with details of the work, amongst which was the re-roofing in traditional Auvergne "slate". 60m2 roof loaded with 60t slate!
WE also learned that the chimneys hereabouts also tell the story of the religion of the builders. Chimneys here are open and then covered with a slab supported at the four corners to allow the gases to escape. The cover slab is often topped with a stone. A pointed stone indicated a Catholic family and a round stone a Protestant one.
