Banned from EU: Elderly UK couple barred from flight to Malta over India-made Covid jab yesterday
A BRITISH couple were purportedly refused entry onto a flight to Malta over bureaucratic disagreements between Britain and the European Union regarding the coronavirus vaccine.

What was the problem with this Indian made vaccine? As I understand it, it was made purely for internal use and not for export and therefore wasn't licenced for use in Europe (or elsewhere for that matter) but it was sent to the UK either by design or accident, who knows.... The UK government was claiming that it hadn't been used in the UK but the manufacturers said it had. That's the last I heard about it but others may have more up-to-date info

What was the problem with this Indian made vaccine? The vaccine is fine and WHO approved, its not licenced for use in the EU via EMA as far as i know, the UK 'forgot' to apply for the licence for that particular batch/version.

This is not an EU ruling, Malta decided unilaterally to not accept people vaccinated with this batch of the AZ vaccine and I've not seen anything to suggest that France is going to take the same approach.

The Indian version of the AZ vaccine, Covidshield, has not been approved by the EMA saying AstraZeneca hasn't completed the necessary paperwork on the Indian factory, including details on its production practices and quality control standards, even though the WHO has inspected the factory and approved the vaccine.
So it is down to individual countries to accept it. So far Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Estonia, Iceland and possibly Switzerland have said in is eligible. France is holding out until the EMA approves it, as are the other EU countries.
Covidshield has also been used in Africa so it is causing problems for travellers, including French citizens living overseas, from there trying to enter some of Europe.

I don't know what all the fuss is about.
The UK government stated that the Indian made AZ vaccine has not been used in the UK.Surely they would not lie!

The Serum institute vaccine was never envisaged to be used in the EU. The stance that only EMA approved vaccines can be accepted for those entering the EU moves the goalposts and creates all sorts of problems.
Sinovac - not approved Sputnik - not approved but being evaluated
Those two alone create problems for many Hungarian citizens. Hungary gave emergency approval for use but as of today they cannot be used to create an EU vaccine passport.

Malta has done a complete u-turn and will now allow people in who have had any AZ vaccine.
