Apparently the first A-league footballer to publicly admit his homosexuality, he has received lots of support from players around the world.
One has to wonder, though, did he jump or was he pushed? In this day and age (tautology, I think), it shouldn't matter, but it obviously does if people make a point of stating what, to many, is already obvious.

Some years ago. Justin Fashanu (Cloughie paid one million pounds for him in a transfer from Norwich) the brother of Wimbledon player John Fashanu, admitted to being gay whilst being a pro footballer. Sadly died at age 37 in 1998

IMO, it shouldn't even make the 'news' - because it doesn't affect their ability to do their job and their private lives are no-one else's business.

For some reason female sportspeople find it far easier to come out than their male counterparts. I think it needs a few 'elite level' men playing 'macho' sports to come out before we get anywhere near general acceptance that someone's sexuality is irrelevant to what they do.

Of course it shouldn't matter but as it stands right now, it is a very rare occurrence so it makes the headlines just as anything out of the ordinary would.

Why do people have to ‘come out’? Just carry on your life as normal. It is as though they are hoping that they have admitted to all and looking for others of the same ilk. I despair.
