With the onset of autumn two or three weeks ago I noticed a large wasps nest at the top of a tree in a local reserve where I take my daily exercise. Yesterday afternoon it seems that somebody from the local council has also noticed it. I can’t quite fathom out what the purpose of the tape and that they seem to have erected around the tree, blocking the footpath in doing so. There is another nest about two or three hundred meters away but they do not seem to have noticed that. I suspect that it is to be seen to be doing something, never mind how utterly ineffective it for any other purpose that I can imagine. Attachment Deleted

It's far more likely to be an Asian hornet nest than wasps. They're still active and known to be aggressive if they feel that the colony is being threatened by passers-by. An explanatory sign would perhaps be more effective, though.

She says that there are four nests. perhaps I should inform the council!

The council might show some interest if they are Asian hornets, as they're classed as nuisibles, but unlikely if they're European ones. Even then, from what I've read on the Gov.site, the onus is mainly on apiculteurs to deal with the menace.
