A report on TF1 tonight dealt with families in far flung parts of Afghanistan who, since the Taliban succeeded in reclaiming the country, are selling one of their children in order to have money to survive. It seemed like 500€ per child, one of the examples was a seven-year-old sold to an old man.
Apparently it's an ancient practice which has reappeared, and while I can't condone it, I can certainly understand it; that's the difference between not finding an excuse but finding a reason.
Once the report is available on Replay, I'll post the link.

Not at all surprised, it’s been going on for generations I think. I recall my first visit to Bangladesh in about 1976. Chittagong the main port is or was at least very poor. It was common practice for parents to maim their children in order to be able to beg and get more. Children had limbs missing which the parents seemed almost proud of in order to ask more from the more well off. They would sell their children’s bodies seemingly from almost any age. The asking price (as I understood it) was anything from a bar of soap to a few taka.

It's a hideous practice but, I feel sure, is condoned by the Taliban as subjugating small, female children to be obedient, loyal wives to aged men keeps the female population trapped in the home in a menial role as, if sold at a young age, the youngsters know no other reality. Edit : Far removed from the practices in Bangladesh ..

Hideous? I'm not sure that's the right word for the sale of one's child, not when compared to female genital mutilation, but the sad fact is that in Afghanistan, FGM goes with the territory, so the poor girl sold has probably also been mutilated.
On seeing the report my wife wondered how it can happen in the 21st century, I suggested that the far-flung parts of Afghanistan are far from the 21st century.

The report is here - there's an ad first, but it should play afterwards.

The case of the much loved baby girl sold recently talked of the starving family with young male children to feed.
