Their fifth wave has provoked it, apparently, and their infection rate is over 800 cases per 100,000.
The Dutch are also imposing a lockdown "lite", according to the article.

Well I guess it had to happen and the high and mighty will complain of discrimination/victimisation and so on The fact is however that Austria has decided that further steps have to be taken. Mask wearing rules are in place. Social distancing is in place.
Next step is lockdown. So the question is, do you lock everyone down or just those that are causing proportionately the bigger part of the problem. They have clearly decided that it is unfair to lock everyone down, when there is a significant group of recalcitrant citizens who by their lack of action are helping to spread the virus.
Full marks to them.

How on earth will that be enforced? Recalcitrance doesn't generally go hand in hand with compliance.

I am sure there will be some problems probably provoked by the far right (misnamed) Freedom party, but Rabbit is right. Many will comply. From a somewhat limited personal experience of working with Austrians they share with the Germans the ethic of generally following the rules. Not at all like the British or the French for that matter.

I think the Germans and Austrians have a history of obeying the rules.
