The test is currently after 2 days because previously a negative test result was also needed before travel, since dropped, it made sense then to have both as there can be a delay of 48 hours between contracting the virus and it being detectable.
It would make sense to go back to that system but as the mates of the government ministers who by pure coincidence happened to set up testing companies have been having a raw time since the PCR requirement was dropped to lateral flow, travellers to the UK will probably be made to take a test on arrival and another after 2 days with one of the approved companies.

Of what, a supposition?
To quote my mentor Alex Orr "it must be true because I have only just made it up!"

I'm looking into driving off the ferry and straight to Gatwick Airport for the 0-2 day PCR test. Gonna cost a packet but as we are only there for 10 days worth it.

Thats the one that I use, not the cheapest but a very good service, very friendly staff considering that they are working outside in all weathers.

It was when I was looking for solutions that I remembered you talking about doing a drive through test there. You may have in the past posted the answer to this, but how long was it from doing the test to getting the email with the result.

Test in morning, result afternoon, the samples are collected twice a day.
Worst case the next morning.

South Terminal, the one that has been closed since the beginning of CV19. Which knowing me probably means the North Terminal You turn left before the big hotel towards the now disused long term car park, there are signs for Express Test Drive in Centre but not big like the road signs. M23 Junction ?, (probably J10)Gatwick turn off, follow link road to terminals, take left exit at first roundabout for South (I think) terminal, turn left just before hotel and terminal.

And given the doubtful reliability of the tests its all a bit of a farce anyway. Until, as has been stated many times before, everyone is vaccinated at essentially the same time this pandemic will keep coming back. And until recommendations become laws with severe penalties any new variants will be everywhere on the planet within days.

For info it looks like Uk gov website is starting to catch up with the changes and making things a bit more clear If fully vaccinated, arriving in England… “From 4am 30 November, lateral flow tests will not be accepted. You must arrange to take a PCR test before the end of day 2 after you arrive.” self isolate until test result known, etc etc.. link

Well getting a PCR test has proven all but impossible so OH has deferred her trip until January when things might be a bit more stable - or maybe not.

I just tried Express Test drive in centre at Gatwick, there are others at London, Birmingham & I can't recall the rest and can book any time any day as before but I did notice that they only have availability going forward 10 days, if you were trying to book for later than that then I can see why you think its impossible, I have only ever booked at the last minute after deciding to travel & waiting for the results of the pre departure test (when it was required)so as not to lose my money.
As things are in a state of flux they probably don't want to take forward bookings that may be cancelled & have people chasing refunds.
