An big hole appeared overnight in the open grass area between our house and the horse paddocks - does anyone have an idea of what it might be? It's perfectly round, a good 30cm in diameter and more than 40cm deep - the sides open out slightly below ground - it doesn't appear to join any underground tunnels, although I haven't had a serious poke around in it yet - and most strangely, there's no sign of the missing soil! We often get mole hills, rabbit holes or fox holes, but this is in a different league - it's huge! I thought it could be a badger hole, but it seems too big and the location is completely open and exposed (it's only about 6 metres from the house)..and there are no soil deposits around the hole ![]() Any ideas? I just tried to post photos but apparently they are too big and I have to resize them....will have to do it later... what a faff!

The wild boar who 'visit' our land make a mess but not anything like 40cm deep and it's generally a large area that's affected, not just one significant hole.

Gosh, Crystal. You need that like you need a hole in the head.

Your real name's not Alice, is it? For resizing pictures, there's a downloadable tool that is very basic - PIXresizer - or an online site to resize, www.shrinkpictures.com/.

With all the rain we have had, I imagine it is a sink hole. It could be over a disused soakaway from your house and has collapsed.

Do you have any drains or water pipes in that area?
Edit PE is thinking along similar lines

I was also thinking sinkhole until I saw the radiussed edge with some vertical striations.
POW's are trying to hide a tunnel that they have previously dug using soil from your hole, be suspicious of anyone with baggy trousers & muddy shoes and socks.

No drains or water pipes in the area and yes, pcpa, the vertical lines do look like spade marks, but I assume they are claw marks...I don't think it's a sink hole because of the bevel around the top, although I suppose there could be a tunnel (animal's) under there - maybe the hole was dug from below? I was going to fill it in with stones for safety reasons, but I think I'll just cover it until I get time to get my spade out to investigate further. I'm still thinking badger...

Surprising that such a reclusive animal would dig a sett so close to your dwelling and the horse activity
