Yes, it is - I can only think that maybe it was dug from a tunnel below - and if that's the case, I'm sure it was shocked to find itself looking into our kitchen window!

Also weird that there seems to be little sign of the earth that was in the hole.

I had a campagnol that kept popping up in my cellar or in parts of the garage where the concrete was incomplete, he/she was the cutest little fella I have ever seen. As i gradually paved all the outside areas I saw less and less of it, I hope it dug its way to somewhere more peacefull.

I take that back...
Maybe an old occupier buried his/her or family life savings there and came back to get it

There is no excess dirt because there was something in the hole... That is simple...

‘What is the most common cause of a sink hole? Image result for causes of sink holes "The main trigger for sinkholes is water," says Dr. Edmonds. "In 90% of sinkhole cases, water saturating the ground is the main trigger, known as Karst’

Definately not a sink hole - the top bevelled section and the edges of the hole are smooth and the soil in the bottom is loose and 'fresh', like the texture of a mole-hill...hummm...maybe it's just a collapsed mole-hill? - I'll find out at the week-end.

Definitely not a sink hole, definitely not an object that someone has dug up and put the earth back in the hole, I hope that was a joke.
The missing soil is the mystery, a molehill cannot collapse into itself, the volume of spoil is 50% bigger than the volume of the gallery excavated, even with une dameuse it would still stand proud and not create a hole.
Likewise if there is say a badger gallery underneath & the soil was removed by that then there must be a mound of excavated soil around their sett somewhere close by.

I feel certain that this is a sink hole and when you investigate will find a soakaway or better, the source of an underground spring (always hopeful). Is it near the sortie of your fosse sand bed? Waste water soakaways and sewage system outlets are favorite for this.

It's nowhere near a fosse or a soakaway - an underground spring is a possibility because centuries ago, they must've had good reason to name our hamlet 'Fontaine', but I doubt it'll turn out to be anything that exciting.
edit: I'm now unnerved by the thought that it could even be a well - which would be a fantastic discovery, but I'd be horrified to learn that my horses have been walking back and forth over it every day....
I'm frustrated that I can't investigate it sooner.

I knew someone in Nottingham I think it was, who woke up one morning to see his car together with part of his next door neighbour's house in a sink hole...must have been quite a frightening experience!

It really does not resemble a sinkhole but if it is then it would explain the missing soil, 6m from a dwelling could be an old well.
Be carefull when investigating it Crystal, have someone with you.
A sinkhole appeared in the tarmac of the car park at my old commercial premises, it was an old well that had been capped back in the day with timber followed by compacted soil. We had to secure the area before making a reinforced concrete cap because people were going down to find Victorian bottles & artifacts from where it had been used for domestic refuse.
