I've just had that thought also, that it could be a well...hence the edit of my last post.

Our chickens make a very similar hole for a dirt bath. They keep coming back to the same spot because it catches the sun and it slowly gets deeper and neater over time.

Before I saw the pictures, I thought instantly of a well but seeing the pictures not so sure. As others have said, don't go to it alone, if it is a sink hole please take extreme care as it can expand quickly. Where are you based ? that might give a clue to what it is.

Have you watched Corrie lately? They've had major sinkhole problems on there of late!
To Biggles and me, it looks nothing like a fox or badger hole. It's very strange too how there's no sign of grass down in the hole .......... The edge looks so clean 'cut' and the diameter is so even it looks unreal. If it were a sinkhole, wouldn't the grass still b on the top of what has fallen down into the hole?

I made 10 holes recently of that diameter and as neat as that for a line of fencing, I made up a plywood drill jig that I could stand on to hold it in place ensuring the holes were exacty where they should be (it wanders like hell otherwise) all of the spoil came up the archimedes screw and laid on the board, it could be removed cleanly and when the board was removed the grass was prefectly intact around ten precisely aligned 200mm diameter holes.
Whatever animal did yours is a better worker than me with all the aids at my disposal, I bet the hole is plumb as well!

If it were a sinkhole, wouldn't the grass still b on the top of what has fallen down into the hole? The sinkhole started as a smaller diameter and sank deeper than as seen in the photo, it then would have progressed by the sides sliding in the deep hole, increasing the diameter covering the original surface grass and making the sides smooth. It all depends on the type of soil, if it is sandy without a lot of fibre, it would look like it is in the photo. edit. Notwithstanding, the surface runoff rainwater would have poured into this hole and added to the smoothness and rounded off sides. The fact that there is no water in the hole suggests good drainage underneath as in a soakaway. A disused well should have had a stone cover and if that broke, the hole would not be so round. Lastley, I have a buried millstone in my driveway that I discovered recently and the centre hole is just about the same size as this sinkhole. One could test the surrounding surface with a long drillbit to see if there is any hidden stone.

We braved the horrible weather this afternoon to further investigate the mysterious hole...and discovered...absolutely nothing! We dug in and around the hole and tried to push in a steel bar, but the soil beneath the hole seems to be just solid clay - no sign of any mole tunnels - nothing! We filled it with stones to make it safe for now, but the next time we have a digger here we'll have another look.
