I recall my surprise the first time I noticed that buying a larger size of a product doesn't always mean it will be cheaper than buying several smaller packs totalling the same amount.

I've just got my breath back from filling up the car (only a 206, hardly a gas-guzzler).......€70 €1.60 a ********* litre for basic diesel!! This is just crazy!

In the UK it's the equivalent of €1.78.

It always was dearer than petrol there, but FFS, what's this going to do to the haulage industry, and ultimately, the cost of living?

I never fill up, just put in 20€ worth at a time, it's less painful on the pocket that way.

A good move @ffs when the prices are falling.
They are not falling.

A good move @ffs when the prices are falling. They are not falling. Fairly regularly here we have Leclerc selling their fuel à prix coûtant, and Intermarché follow; no reason to think that's not going to happen again. And topping up, instead of filling up, seems to be the general practice where I live, from casual observation.

My van has guzzled about a quarter tank since this topic was discussed late last summer. The OH's estate has just over a quarter tank left. At the rate we use it, some other commodity will send us to the poorhouse, not diesel. Possibly firewood or electricity.

I work the other way, prefer to keep it filled by topping up with 20€. Then no shocks plus covered for any emergencies, strikes etc.

Whether the filling station takes 0,1,2,3,4 or 5c per litre as its profit, pales against the 12c or more per litre increase in the last 5-6 weeks. Brent crude is a bit under $90/barrel. Do not be surprised if we don't see $120 before the end of spring.

Apart from other considerations, like not dredging up the gunge from the bottom of the tank, I live 20kms from the two local Leclercs, so try not to do the trip unnecessarily. If I bought fuel at the village garage, I'd be looking at €1.70+ per litre.

My station's less than 2 km away, so I'll stick to my topping up as and when necessary.
