On the news tonight was an item on the price rises for, amongst other things, petrol at the pump in the States: $3.00+/gallon at the moment, an increase of over 40% recently. When I calculated that's less than 90 centimes/litre, I had much less sympathy.

$1,13 for €1 so a little less than 0,90 a liter The US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches (3.785 liters)
It has not gone up a lot since I left in 1998 when it was around 0,99 a gallon.. A pack of name brand cigarettes were the same; $1 a pack which have gone up more than petrol..
It all depends on the State also.. New York or California will be much, much more expensive than Texas or Florida.

Even so, when you consider the more they have of many things that we on this side of the pond don't have, it's hard to feel much sympathy for their fuel price rises.

I'd go further and say why the **** are we in Europe being made to feel guilty and pay up to the hilt in the name of 'saving the planet' while that cesspit of a country carries on doing what it pleases?

You are not "paying up" for the environment you are paying for the oldies (old people), everyone who decides they do not want to work and healthcare for everyone.
