Do you have the proof of that Fu2 or it it a Guardian rumour? He definitely renounced his US Citizenship..for what reason I know not..but it highlights the fact that many people may be citizens of more than one country by birth and hence the notion of citizenship is perhaps different. I had a friend I used to work with who was born in New York to Irish/US citizens and had US, Irish and British nationality. My sister in law is Italian/British. Plenty of people have Irish/British citizenship, and some of us choose to become citizens of the country that we live in. If either the British or the French government made dual nationality illegal then I would have to choose and I would choose the country where I live, although I would be buggered if I would pay for the privilege.

Do you feel that way about Aardvark?
Did you express your views as robustly on the other forum where at least the member will know what is being said about her?
No, for about 20 years we can have dual citizenship...
I would be banned from that forum if I said anything..
And pcpa's first question?

Do you have the proof of that Fu2 or it it a Guardian rumour? Tut, tut trying to down a newspaper that is not in the hands of the Tory party backers. Can you seriously state on here that the Daily Mail, Express, Telegraph, The Sun etc are more honest papers ? Or will you back off by suggesting you don't read any newspapers?

I'm a little late coming to this party but I'll stick my two centimes in. I left the US under a somewhat dark cloud and went to live with my grandparents in England. About 6 months later a copper turned up at the door with instructions to collect my passport. "What next", I asked. He said as long as I behave myself absolutely nothing. Five years later I decided I would like to see the rest of Europe so I applied for and was granted UK citizenship. A few months later I received a stiff letter from the US government telling me that in doing so I had expatriated myself. Clearly they weren't having any of this dual nationality nonsense. So I gave the US the third finger vertical gesture and never went back. And I would add, if they were expecting me to pay tax as an expat I would have intentionally expatriated myself with glee. Leaving the US was the best thing I ever did, even though I desperately missed the California lifestyle for many years.

If I was talking face to face with someone who said denounce instead of renounce, I cannot tell you on an open forum what I would do.

The USA is the only country who seek to claim taxes from its citizens even if have paid their taxes in another country.
So if you are an American citizen (or just born there) and sold a house for a profit in say France, the USA could come after you.
There is a limit below that that won't bother with, but it is quite common to denounce citizenship for wealthy USA expats.

People renounce US citizenship to avoid CGT from worldwide assets. That's my understanding, at least.

if you are born there you are automatically a us citizen.
Most countries have a tax agreement with the US; in France it is $75000 before you have to pay US of A taxes; but you still have to file with IRS

Just been reading on another forum of an american denouncing her citizenship.. What a tool...
Nothing in the world would ever make me do that. I cannot write what my reaction would be if I was talking face to face to someone and they announced that to me..
Good riddance. Don’t you have to pay to do it? That’s the best reason for staying à US citizen, saving money.
