Or if you don't like switching between the on screen one and the real one you could always keep this picture handy so you can blow it up and see better (the keyboard can be sized bigger so you can see it easier on screen, as shown in this attachment). I actually got quite quick at typing on my half working keyboard and picking up the keys that weren't working with the mousepad on the on screen keyboard . You can just minimise it if you don't want it on screen all the time. Attachments:

I don't have a search bar or if I do then I dont know where it is, I never knew that my computer (2007) had any apps, I doubt that OSK would be recognised by the French language operating system, Ibis mentioned "handicap", there is a menu called "accessibilité" so I will look there, do they really call it "handicap" in the English language operating system?

Best keyboard, that I use now, is a French Canadian one - Querty but with accents on other keys - making it easy to use when writing in French but with a more familiar keyboard. Apparently they have several keyboards in use in Canada.
My laptop was bought in Canada and keyboard chosen then but it may be possible to order one. Happy Easter.

Is it normal on a french keyboard for the numerals to require the shift key? Or do I have a 'special one'

Why do not you just try it out.. word, notes, excel if you are capable; internet exployer address bar, etc..
Was not there a picture of the keyboard for you to view before you purchased it??

Accessibility on mine. Maybe it's an American thing? Seems odd though. Try clavier then? You don't have a search bar in your task bar where you can type things and the programs show up? You're not on Windows 10 then? Do you have a control panel? If I go to control panel I can see Ease of Access Centre and then there is a button to turn on the on screen keyboard.

My son also used to use it to get French special characters when he only had an English keyboard. When you switch keyboard layout for the manual keyboard it also switches for the on screen keyboard so you can see which key to hit even if you don't actually use the mouse to select it off the screen. I have various laptops and desktops but I don't have one with XP or Windows 7 I don't think - or maybe a desktop but not set up. Wasn't there an on screen keyboard in that?
