My nail lady is Portuguese, she's been living in France since 8 years, now she's 55 years. She fears Le Pen will chuck us all out. What will happen to the French economy if all us expats stop paying taxes, EDF, Orange, health care, supermarkets? I'm not worried and I think Macron will win again As far as chucking us all out, M le Pen gave up on that one at the last election and mellowed in the one before. Now it's no impots for the under 30's. It's true the French don't rely "solely" on us Brits but we are useful for the economy in general but nowhere near as much as the UK relies on immigrants working in the UK. Macron to win, or rather a Le Pen to lose in the final round as usual, France can sell one aeroplane or missile and cover what most of the retired old folks on this forum put into the economy; who likely pay no income tax on their measly pensions in France.
Britian needs a system like California or even Spain for it's agricultural allowing immigrants to come over, work, get paid a decent sum and then go back home.

I can see Le Pen not chucking you all out but raising the bar so only the most desirable are allowed entry; sadly, most of the ones already here ( legally, so if your nail lady is not, then she has a right to worry) will be grandfathered claused and allowed to stay.

Voter ID helps reduce election fraud nothing to do with being poor. ID cards enable citizens, all citizens.

Except the Mrs and I although registered for the local elections and had our cards, the Mairie never had us down on their entrance sheets as we went to vote. Panic set in on their side because we could have declared the vote nul and void had we not been able to vote.

The economy here is not about Impots alone, many people we know spend in the region of €500 or more a month, in shops, online or wherever, all adding to the overall economy of France. Britain did have an excellent system and Brexit blew it apart, now crops rot in the fields.

I think we can easily inflate our importance. I have done the sums for my commune and seen what impact our income has had on the average income for the commune as a whole (significant). If our income ceased, then the commune would just go back to where it was. A bit of a bu@@er but a few hundred Euros compared with a spend of hundreds of thousands - most as subventions from the Departement and Region.
Yes we spend money locally. Do you really think however that your local supermarket is going to go into liquidation because you no longer are able to shop there? They lose more each week because the local competitor has a deal on loo rolls.
The thousands/tens of thousands we spent in the past are just that - past contributions.

It's everything to do with poverty. If it's mandatory, it's £120 tax on the poorest families. If it's voluntary, for poorer families it's an additional choice, eat, heat or vote. Why were we trusted by other governments to vote honestly, but not this bunch of crooks? There hasn't been a significant case of voter id fraud that you could point to and say, that's why? There are many reasons one could site why not to trust Johnson & Co and why we should question their motives.

Some here are only here to berate the current UK government, no matter the subject. You learn to live with it.

Family of four very easy to spend €500 a month, I'm afraid with bills, food, cars and house insurances, water, electric, our outlay is well over €12k......it's not getting any cheaper here, then there's holiday (s) lunches, dinners, the list goes on and on. I can give you lessons not sure how I can help though 😀
