Temps due to drop to 5°C tonight 3° forecast here I have had to have the heating on the last 2 nights. Now I have seen the photograph it was definitely une danse that I saw, next question, do they fly at night?
I heard a similar cacaophony of numerous avians the other night, it sounded like overhead but difficult to pinpoint, no point looking outside as it was pitch black, the field behind has just had the maize harvested and there are loads of small birds feeding, the noise may have been a flock descending on the field but the same question remains, what if any birds fly at night?

Thanks to Google I have found that yes, they migrate at night but also:
The Common Cranes primarily use large lakes and reservoirs as dormitories and eat in the fields around, especially in corn stubble in the Autumn.
The field is fresh corn stubble so it is possible that they may have descended, I will go out sharpish if I hear the cacophony again.
It's a surprise and lovely benefit of moving to this area!

This is the news about the migration, for those interested it is on the LPO site:
"Le matin, 1 370 grues sont dénombrées au lac de Puydarrieux. La migration est calme en France en raison du mauvais temps sur une partie de notre pays. Seule exception dans les Pyrénées-Atlantiques où les vols sont nombreux : un observateur note 3 145 grues en seulement 20 minutes ! Nouveaux mouvements en Allemagne avec 8 750 grues en Hesse. A Arjuzanx, 7 138 grues sont dénombrées lors du comptage réalisé par l'équipe de la réserve."

Do they honk or cackle while flying? They cry " grue, grue" that is why the French call them grues. It's " les motoristes maghrebins" that honk and 'Les tricoteuses " that cackle! Tut! You've broken at least two political-correctness taboos with that post. Shame be upon you!

Poor blighters are being tracked more than a Fessbook user! They're a damn sight more dependable than the various météo sites for indicating weather tendencies 130 grues passed over our house yesterday evening , they were having trouble flying into the SW wind and had to work hard to keep going . So the migration route is probably further to the East this year.

There was a smallish danse over our valley yesterday, too. They stopped to use the thermals, circled half a dozen times, re-formed and off they went. Not the brightest ones, those. It's supposed to warm up again next week

It's supposed to warm up again next week Probably the same ones that passed here , they were being blown South East by the wind .

I know , but usually they fly via les landes and down to the pyrenees , so if they are fighting the wind , then they will pass over you.
