Since the 7th century Islam has been a religion of world importance. Nothing has changed, nothing new. In the UK ? Lots of Muslims in the UK quietly practising their religion already, not inflicting it on everyone. Who cares? There’s as much chance as Christian fundamentalism becoming the norm as Islamic fundamentalism. Not really sure the point of this discussion, just seems like an excuse to pick on Muslims…

I was thinking in terms of cities rather than countries but you are quite right. While I was still in Germany one statistician worked out that by the end of this century Germany would have more Muslims than Christians - for all that really mattered. The problem with all thee clever sums is that it only takes one unforeseen event to turn them into toilet paper. Interesting point , seeing as muslims don't use it ?

If Islam becomes a major religion in the UK ( which is what I was posting about) then there is a high possibility that the country will move in a different direction , maybe even for the better?
If you don't want to discuss the rise of Islam in the West , then don't , simples . Check out how much of London is owned by various Arab heads of state?

Oh come on. What I say it quite clear. Yes it is , they don't ride camels or live in tents anymore , that is why I found it amusing .

I think we all know what you mean. No need to further elaborate me thinks.

Sadly, the atavistic fear of "other" is characteristic of humanity on general. For all the trappings of the modern world and the accepted wisdom that we are intellectually equipped to overcome these animal instincts, it's quite clear that many (most?) are only comfortable with what they know and have become accustomed to.
So it's no real surprise that the original observation that Ramadan is being celebrated partly by lighting up Oxford Street should cause fear at a primal level. It's a move away from the status quo.
However, I suspect that as Muslims - like Hindus, Sikhs etc - become a more normal part of life, the religious festivities become commonplace, maybe that fear of "other" will ameliorate.

As I noted earlier , the Catholic faith is in decline , so perhaps instead of expecting " other" religions to convert to Christianity, the opposite will happen and there will be mosques in every village? Or as has happened in many towns in the UK , the churches are converted to bars/restaurants.

So what do YOU think will happen Cerunnos if there are mosques in every village in a country you don’t even live in which I think is very doubtful to be honest. It’s obviously important to you?

The nearest mosquée to me is far closer than the nearest bar or tabac, its 4km away right amongst the restos on the mad mile.

Perhaps YOU should read the original post , it was a quote from a French site about what was happening for the first time in London . I said PERHAPS there will be mosques in every village .
I enjoy a good discussion Jackie, some folk are still living in the age of the crusades , things have changed and many have not noticed.

Cernunnos you should refrain from discussing France and quoting from French articles, it creates confusion.

At least Muslims are doing something to curb consumption! In the days that I thought I could save the planet single handedly I cut black and turned to stone.
