The Irish is the best bit. My wife spent a lot of time becoming Irish so we could return to spending lengthy periods in Spain/ Portugal over the winters, that was of course brought to an end when Brexit kicked in, then she took DNA tests with her paternal Father and after several forms going backwards and forward she become an Irish citizen. Then our only Daughter on 1st January last year gave us a Granddaughter...guess what, my wife, now of course a Granny no longer wishes to leave her for more than a few weeks at the very most!! Oh well...

Half Welsh, half Irish, born in England. Being born in England is a bit like an 'original sin' .......

Do you have dna samples? Before, and during the period you quote, there were invasions by the Romans, the Angles, the Northmen, the Norman's (who were of course settled Northmen, or Vikings to you and me). No doubt I've missed a few other marauders. Being sure you're pure 'english' is a tricky one.

I think you've misunderstood, you have quoted being half this or that which only indicates certainty over parental origin. I've gone back to the early 1500's and can be sure that from that point and on both sides of my family they were all born in England. Of course, if I was able to go further back then undoubtedly I'd probably find Norman blood which was the last invasion I think.

I am very pleased that I am not "pure bred" , not good for the gene pool. Last invasion was from the EU I think , but the Tories put a stop to that , but still plenty of Asian blood arriving ?

Tell me, how do you trace back so far with certainty.? I'd be interested to do some research on my family but I thought registrations didn't start until the 1830s.

When the Church of England split from Rome in the early 1530's thanks to Henry VIII parish priests had to keep written records of births and deaths etc and these were maintained right through to when civil registration started in 1837.

Do you have to visit the church to look at the records or are they online.
