If I did that I would share the contents with my close engineer friend, maybe the box if he doesn't have his own Fathers one.
The good thing about here is there are lots of retired engineers and hobbyists French and English, anything put up on the Facebook groups (bilingual) finds a good home very quickly, I could not say that about my old area.
I will look and see where you are, French Geography not my strong point!

I feel really guilty. I just went down to look at the box and it's empty. My husband must have given the tools away. He gave a lot of stuff away in his last months and weeks. I'm so sorry to have misled you. Hope you feel better soon.

Mangetout, don't beat yourself up, it was a lovely gesture and would of been greatly appreciated, I have my Grandfather's tool box that he made himself and stocked with tools that don't fit metric fittings but I absolutely love it and on the odd occasion that I need a tool from it, it lifts my heart and keeps me in a good mood all day.
Cherish the box and maybe put it on display, so when you catch sight of it... the memories.
Like PCPA, I would of gone out of my way to own such a piece of history and you were correct in trying to pass such an heirloom on to someone you know would use it and keep the dream alive in the memory of your husband.
Note: to anyone reading this post to do the same as when someone passes, it is done all to quickly and things are lost to the tip too quickly.

I have had the same problem with my 8ftx4ft (internal) builders trailer, everything so expensive in France, I was in Emmaus (probably spelt wrong) in St Brieuc and I saw sheets of second hand 18mm marine plywood being sold for 10€ a sheet, I returned with my trailer and bought 8 sheets, it was a few years back but I am down to my last sheet, I now have no floor in my trailer but keep a sheet of plywood in the shed for when I need it and just drop it in. 10€ a sheet for 18mm Marine grade? That must have been some few years ago. When I was building boats in UK I was paying about £90+ a sheet (trade) for those. It was about 25 years ago. I got a shock when I had to buy a sheet with teak veneer both sides. £132, nearly had a heart attack.

I still have and use my trailer that I moved with from Holland 32 years ago , original bottom , maybe because it has been kept dry ? Those lucky enough to have barns and covered storage don't know how lucky they are. Apart from those who complain when birds come in to nest and poop on their Mercedes.

Covered with a tarpaulin ? My barns are full of hay, firewood, sheep and work, not lucky, just hard working. Didn't waste a lot of money on cars like some ! The car stays outside. I cut holes in our barn doors, so that the birds can get in to nest.
