There's none as deaf as those who don't want to hear. To be absolutely clear, this is directed at cernunnos and aucamville. I for one receive a UK military pension that HAS to be taxed in the UK. I wish it could be taxed in France, France doesn't tax it's retired military. Yes I agree .
My wife has a pension that is taxed directly in the UK , we declare it on our French tax form and get a tax credit for it, never filled in UK tax forms .
Not so deaf , yet.

Mine arrive on Wednesday (I think) and since then I've succeeded in completing both the UK and French income tax returns and am feeling exceedingly smug........... and exceedingly relieved as I get myself in a proper state over this particular odious pastime. Well done Veem! I always get worked up about ours. I received UK forms in the post today, not requested and not expected as I don't meet the age criteria yet! Saved me downloading though. I didn't know about any age criteria? I've had to submit a UK tax form since I first came to live in France 19 years ago when I was still in my 50s and have always received the paper forms through the post. And for those who did not know about some non resident UK tax payers having no choice but to pay tax on certain pensions in the UK, please believe us when we say, if we had the choice we wouldn't put ourselves through the inconvenience and worry for the fun of it. These pensions include those of teachers, military, police, county council, NHS etc. Perhaps when my teachers' pension is my only UK income (apart from state pension whish is declarable in France) I shan't have to submit a UK declaration. The other category for which tax is payable in the UK is rental income obtained from a UK property.

If you are in receipt of a pension as a consequence of being a teacher, in the military, police or in the employ of the county council or the NHS, you have no choice. Tax is deducted in the UK.
If you have an income from rental on a UK property you have no choice but to declare that to HMRC and pay the tax to the UK.

Yes , Jen has an NHS pension , we declare it in France every year and get a tax credit for it So her NHS pension is treated in exactly the same way as my teacher's pension. It's the rental income that is the bugbear. I'm hoping to get away with not having to do a self assessment once HMRC know the house is sold. But years ago when my father was in his 90s and his only sources of income were from his career in further education and a state pension, HMRC still insisted on having his SA declaration every year when it was extremely unlikely his financial situation would ever change.

Veem, I thought someone had mentioned that from this year, they are only sending out paper forms to those over 70. I may have misread/misunderstood that. EDIT: Amanda J highlighted an article earlier in the thread.

That must be why I didn't receive mine through the post until I played merry hell with them!!! Either that or someone at HMRC can't make out my DoB ...... They think I'm under 70! I wish.

Whereas I received mine without ever having received a paper one from them before and I am under 70 for the next 6 years.

I think we're almost saying the same thing!
According to Isabel Want (Allianz) it works like this:-
Declarant 1 Declarant 2
Private pension (no UK tax paid) 1AM / 1BM State pension (no UK tax paid) 1AM & 8SH / 1BM & 8SI Government pension (UK tax deducted) 1AL & 8TK / 1BL & 8TK
Let's hope we all have it right, however we got there.
Whoops - the columns changed when I posted.

I just copy what I did the year before, has worked sofar .We never pay tax , so they don't seem to worry about it too much.

Looks right to me. What is interesting is that some people who have government pensions, like policemen, nurses or civil servants, declare their state pension and any benefits as government despite it being wrong. I know couples who do this. I don't know why, perhaps they just don't want to complicate matters, although I don't see why it should.
