Heavy rain here last night so went out early to inspect the garden. Wish I hadn't. Mole has tunnelled under my lettuce seedlings, which were doing so well, and upended the lot. Grrrrr. It's heading towards the carrots. I don't know how, but it keeps avoiding the traps. Just laid another 4. Fingers crossed.

Moles don't " move on " they finish their tunnel construction ( that is used to catch worms) and then don't need to tunnel anymore unless someone or something destroys their tunnels.

Moles continually extend their tunnels, from which they construct feeding runways. It's the feeding runways which are normally responsible for damaging shallow rooted plants. Tunnels are generally much deeper. The only time moles move on from my garden is when I catch them

You mean moles are going to take over the planet if we don't stop them ? We have moles and voles and mice and still eat our own lettuce and all the rest. Looks like we may have a badger set too . I'm trying to figure out how to work the trail camera , then we will see what is in them thar holes!

Talking to our hunter neighbour on Friday ( who is a good man ) but shoots everything , he told me he used to shoot and eat squirrels when a boy. He has " new" English neighbours , they have 5 or more cats that ripped out all the swallow nests in his cellar last year and ate the babies, so no swallows returned this year.

Moles are active here again at the moment. I seem to be "winning" with my Détauper.

I doubt a cat could manage to destroy a swallows nest given their positioning and building method. Sadly some people just love to hate cats.

Much as I love my cats, I must admit that they're murderous, dedicated hunters. It's not because they're hungry, but I suppose if all you do all day and night is eat, sleep and butter up your humans, it passes for amusement. They do appear to have finally wiped out the local mouse population, which I wouldn't have thought possible. They love bird and frog watching but fortunately they're too lazy to try to catch them. This year it's the lizards that are going through the mill but as they shed their tails, they mostly survive. Rabbits don't last long around here but I do wish they'd muster up some interest in catching the outsize pigeons eating my petits pois
