Is it some sort of holiday today in France?
I got up early to take a trailer load to the tip when it opens at 8 to avoid the usual "after weekend" traffic jam there that makes trailer maneuvering a nightmare. It was shut. No notice on the gate. Went into town to the cashpoint and hardly any cars on the road, etc. Nothing on the radio about WWIII at the moment.

Thanks for that. There seem to be a lot of holidays in May.
So its a one day thing, hopefully? I'm not religious so these things go over my head.

Whitsun/Pentecost. Marks the end of the Easter season. Something to do with the Holy Spirit descending on the Apostles.

Yes, some years the May festivals catch a lot of people out - especially supermarkets closing for the day at lunchtime.

Wasn’t it a new bank holiday brought in by Sarko to help pay for the OAPs ?

Wasn’t it a new bank holiday brought in by Sarko to help pay for the OAPs ? If I remember rightly, the idea was for people to forgo that late May holiday in future after a big May heatwave had caused a load of old people to expire in their Paris apartments from dehydration while their families were enjoying themselves at the seaside. Didn't catch on though.

Yes, I know that but isn’t or didn’t the Lundi de Pentecôte become the journée de la solidarité by Sarko to help the old folks ? If not, which bank holiday is it ?
