Is it possible that I can have an Internet connection but my land-line is dead. Orange say there is a network problem with both Internet and fixed lines down but my Internet connection is working, could it be my phone?

Possible but unlikely. If Orange are saying that there are problems then they should inform you by sms .. we are with Sosh and that's what they do. If there are localised problems then you might have to wait it out .. Sometimes the phone line gets out of sync with the Livebox so disconnecting the Box, waiting a few seconds (usually 30-40) then reconnecting and restarting the Livebox can often solve any synchronisation problems BUT I would wait until Orange tells you smthg concrete. If Orange say nowt then feel free to disconnect and reconnect. I always feel better if I am doing smthg when there's a problem, rather than sitting waiting.

An often wise move when dealing with all this technical "comms" stuff. Interested in your SMS comment. That assumes ownership of a mobile that is switched on in an area where there is network coverage.
We watched a program last night about recently released stuff from NASA. Apparently during the final stages of their probe to Pluto they lost communication with the device. They assumed it had all just got too much for the onboard computer to cope with and it had tried to reboot itself and failed. Luckily there was a backup system in place and once they remembered it would be transmitting at a different frequency they regained contact, with barely hours before the close flypast of Pluto.
Must have been using Windows.

I've tried connecting a spare phone, changed cables, disconnected and restarted, changed phone batteries. You name it I've done it, to no avail. Ah well, in for a quiet few days.

Only thing I haven't tried. I'll have a look and see if I've got a spare. Thank you.

No spare. In fact, if my internet connection is working through my live box doesn't that mean that bit of kit must be working?

What does the livebox say about your phone connection? You can read it on the display (if you have one) or open the config setting in a browser either by typing 'Livebox' or the IP address ' '.

It says the phone is unavailable. Forgive my ignorance, but does the connection to the livebox consist of two parts, internet and phone via one cable?

I have seen broadband working and the PSTN phone not, I presume we are talking PSTN and not a DECT phone plugged into the orange coloured port on the livebox? There are several reasons it can happen, one being if the pair of wires incoming has become one legged ie one of the conductors has become disconnected somewhere, but there could be many others, broadband can work down one conductor as it does not need a go and return, it is a high frequency signal on top of the phone line, but you will probably find the speed is down (if that is the actual fault)

If you look at the filter picture, you will see that it plugs into the wall fitting via that stupid t shaped pin with 6 copper pads (3 each side, considering only 2 cables run the whole show, I have always found this plug totally wierd) anyway the little socket on the bottom is where your orange box plugs in. The phone plugs its tee shaped pin into the corresponding socket on the back of this filter, so there are two lines away from the wall box. If you have internet without the orange box working, you may be connecting to your smartphone, which is acting as a hot spot via the 4G signal. You can check this by seeing where your wifi is connecting to on your computer.

If your orange box is really not working, then I wonder just whose wifi you are connected to. It could be a neighbour's. If you use windows, I do not know how you check this, if you use apple, go to the app with the gear wheel and select wifi.
